Guest blogging: a tool for everyday SEO

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

If you’re operating a blog as part of your search engine optimisation plan, you’re probably already familiar with the concept of guest blogging. It’s one of the staples of today’s blogging community, and probably one of the ways you’ve already strengthened your own position in it. If you don’t have a blog though, you’re most likely missing out on one of the better opportunities for marketing offered by the internet.

Guest blogging is, exactly as it sounds, posting a blog entry on another blogger’s site. The guest blogger generally is rewarded with a link back to their own site or blog, meaning a fair amount of free publicity for only a little work. It is a system that has proved immensely popular, and is not reserved solely for blog owners. It is possible, with a small amount of research and work, for any site owner to use the system of guest blogging to their advantage.

Why do bloggers want other writers on their sites? Guest blogging presents a significant gain from the host blog because not only do they get free content, but their importance in the eyes of their readers goes up a notch as well. Any blog that has enough clout to attract guest writers appears important in the eyes of its readers. Guest posts also offer a little variety in terms of tone and angle.

Guest blogging for SEO

Getting into guest posting is easy when you’re a blogger, but not so easy when you’re not one. The first thing you need to do is ensure that your site or other publications can back up your offer. Bloggers aren’t interested in just anyone guest posting, so you need to provide some online credentials.

If you are confident that your value has been established, it’s time to start approaching blogs. This should be done in the same friendly manner as approaching other sites for links. It’s important to read around the blogs of your industry to see which will be of most benefit to you, and which ones have a style suited to your own. Your SEO consultant should be able to point you in the right direction, and you can talk to us at SEO Consult Australia about blogging.

The important thing to remember is that guest blogging is much like writing guest papers for a publication. It should be treated with seriousness, and not looked at merely as a marketing opportunity. Read any other guest posts you come across to get a handle on the style and scope of guest blogging.

Consider guest bloggers for your own blog

If you’re running a blog as part of your search engine optimization plan, it can be a good idea to consider asking a few other bloggers for guest posts. As noted above, there are significant advantages to having others post on your blog. Apart from the obvious bonus of getting content for free, you also strengthen your relationships with other bloggers, further establishing your position in your blogging community.

7 ways to kill your page

Saturday, January 1st, 2011

A lot of site owners don’t realise it, but appearance counts for a lot in search engine optimisation. If your page doesn’t look right, your bounce rate will be fairly high. That’s bad news for your rankings. If you want to make it in the search engines, you have to watch your looks.

In SEO, it’s just as important to know what not to do as what to do. To that end, here are seven things which can really put users off reading your pages:

*Excessive text. Lots of sites fall into the trap of trying to convey as much as possible on a page. This crowds the reader. Remember that internet users don’t tend to read lots of text, even if it’s in small paragraphs.

*Too much white space. White space is one of those issues site owners find difficult to judge. Many web pages have too little white space. Some have too much. It’s a matter of balance. Pages tend to do well when around a quarter of the visible page is white space.

*Images, or lack thereof. Sites often have problems with images, either because there are too many of them or far too few, depending on how your site has been designed. Some web designers, coming from a design background, put in images that are too large to be practicable. The amount of page these take up may look pretty, but results in a lack of information. On the other hand, sites that have been built from a technical perspective often tend to have no pictures at all, causing an even greater problem.

Images are necessary on your site to give your reader’s eyes a rest. They break up text, and they can communicate without words. Images have to be handled carefully for SEO, so talk to your search engine optimisation consultant about the ones on your site.

*Crazy fonts. Although most businesses know to stick to one or two fonts in their design, they still use the strangest fonts imaginable. There is no crime in having ordinary fonts on your pages. It just means they won’t be distracting.

Another problem is when fonts become too large. It’s good to have fonts at 12 points or above, but don’t go crazy.

*Ugly heading fonts. In contrast to the point above, though, you want your headings to stand out. Don’t just increase the point size of your standard Arial font for your headlines. Choose something that’s got a bit of personality. You can talk to us at SEO Consult Australia about choosing fonts for SEO.

*Soul-draining colours. You know the sort of colours we’re talking about here. For some reason, lots of corporations and major businesses feel that steel blue and light grey are excellent colours. They aren’t. On the web, they’re soul-draining.

*Old design styles. Going old-school doesn’t work on the net. Make sure your layouts are up-to-date, if not fashionable.

These are not only ways to put users off, they’re things that you’ll commonly see around the net. Avoid the above and you’re ahead of the game.
