Facebook and Twitter are currently two of the most popular social networking websites with millions of users from all over the world logging in to these sites regularly to create posts and to read information posted by others. These kinds of websites have been significantly increasing in popularity and this impressive surge in popularity means they have also increased the amount of content and information within their web pages. It has been noticed that this information can be very useful in search and that due to the system used by these social networking websites, real-time search information can be obtained from these websites.

Real-time information is a big issue for the search engines at the minutes as they all want to be providing their users with the best search results possible and by providing real-time results, meaning the information is fresh and relevant. This can be a difficult task for the large and popular search engines such as Google but they have been making significant attempts at working towards this ambitious goal.

The freshness, relevancy and usefulness of posts placed on Twitter and Facebook have obviously not gone unnoticed by the major search engines. It has recently been announced that both Microsoft’s Bing and Google have agreed to deals with Twitter and Facebook to use their information and posts in their SERPs. This way, both search engines will be able to provide users with some real-time search results and it is believed that searchers will find this extremely helpful. An example offered by Google as to why it believes information from tweets can be of such utility is about the weather. It suggests that if a user is searching for snow conditions in a certain location, the tweets of users currently in that specific location could be provided and this would be highly up to date and relevant information.

It is thought that these developments will not likely have much of an effect on Twitter users. Twitter is a fairly public social networking website and many users expect their information in the form of tweets to be shared with others. Facebook is a more private and personal social networking website and so it seems that Facebook will provide users with more options concerning whether or not they want their posts and updates to be included in the search results of the search engines.

The announcement of these deals once again highlights the significance of social networking websites in search and search engine optimisation. The social networking websites are playing an important role for those businesses trying to promote their websites online and for the search engines trying to provide searchers with useful and relevant search results.
