With the major merge of the two companies Microsoft and Yahoo! recently confirmed, many involved in search engine optimisation are already working on ways to optimise websites for Bing. Trying to gain as much information as early as possible will help to ensure good results. The algorithms are going to change with Bing taking over the task of the search and so in order for websites to be ranked highly in the search results in the future, preparations need to be made. It is likely that the planned changes will be implemented sometime next year so this is already an issue for those who wish to continue to run successful search engine optimisation campaigns.

As Bing is one of the major search engines in the current online community and as it is only likely to become even more popular in the future, it is an important search engine for any website to optimise for and to try to develop a successful relationship with. Being ranked highly in the search results of Bing can be highly beneficial for any business. However, being ranked highly in the search results provided by Bing is of particular importance to those that are currently being ranked highly in the search results provided by the Yahoo! search engine. With Yahoo! search being taken over by Bing and different algorithms being used by Bing to determine which websites should be ranked highly when a relevant search query is made, those businesses that are already achieving success in the search results of Yahoo! could be in for a nasty shock and a decrease in traffic to their website. A website that is ranked highly by Yahoo! may not be ranked highly by Bing and so this website will lose a great deal of traffic when Bing takes over.

It is therefore necessary that those businesses that currently rank well in the search results of Yahoo! begin exploring how they can be ranked highly in Bing search results too. A good place to start is to try to identify which keywords a website is ranked highly for in the search results of a Yahoo! search and which of these the website does not rank highly for in a Bing search. It is then time to try and work out why this is the case and how these rankings can be improved.

Whilst the algorithms used by each search engines are different, Bing, like other search engines such as Google, values high quality content and high quality links. If a website is already optimised based upon this then it will likely rank well in Bing search results too. It is necessary to explore this idea though before Bing takes over from Yahoo! next year.

The joining of Microsoft and Yahoo! in the providing of search is an important and very consequential development. At SEO Consult we have been exploring this merge and what it means for our clients and their search engine optimisation campaigns to ensure that business is not lost when Bing takes over the Yahoo! search. We will continue to monitor these changes closely so we can provide our clients with the most up to date information and the very best search engine optimisation techniques to help their businesses succeed.
