With the announcement of the recent deals between Facebook and Twitter and Google and Bing, there is now a lot of speculation over what this will mean for the search results provided by these search engines and how these results will really be better than before.

The main advantage from these search engines having access to this information is that they will be able to provide searchers with real-time search results. The providing of Real-time results is currently a highly significant issue for those working in search. Social networking websites like Twitter can provide real-time results and this is something the search engines have been aiming for too. It is a little more complicated for search engines as Google to provide real-time search results because of the vast amount of information they hold within their databases. Websites such as Twitter are obviously handling a lot less information than Google and therefore are able to explore and rank information on a real-time basis. However, with these recent agreements made between the search engines and the social networking websites, Bing and Google will be able to provide users with some real-time search results.

How this information from the social networking websites will be ranked in the search results provided by Bing and Google is an issue of great interest. Obviously, time is a hugely significant factor as these results are real-time information and therefore how recently a piece of information was posted can be linked to relevancy. However, other factors must also be taken into consideration by the search engines if relevant SERPs are going to be offered. The relevancy factor has not previously been incorporated into the search carried out by Twitter and therefore this development is significant and new for users.

Bing has currently stated that how many followers a Twitter user has will affect how their tweets are ranked in the Bing search results and tweets that feature the same content as other tweets will be ranked lower in the results. Bing has not yet given any more details about the algorithm it will be using in ranking.

Google has not yet commented on how information from Facebook and Twitter will be ranked and those involved in search engine optimisation are watching these developments carefully.

Using the social networking websites can be effective in search engine optimisation and from these recent agreements the influence of these websites appears to be increasing. Although Google and Bing have not yet officially stated how the rankings of this kind of information will be evaluated in rankings, creating a profile, regularly updating it with relevant and quality content and encouraging as many followers as possible by providing information that is interesting and entertaining, are likely to be methods that businesses can use to improve their rankings.
