The search technology used by Ask

Monday, January 4th, 2010

The technology used by the search engines is vital for the search engines to be able to provide searchers with relevant and useful information for a wide range of search queries. This technology enables the search engines to explore the many different websites and web pages that are available online and direct users to suitable and relevant sites when they enter a keyword or search term into the search box of the search engine. All of the search engines use slightly different technology as they retrieve and rank different websites in varying ways.

Ask is currently one of the most popular search engines with millions of users turning to the website for their search needs on a regular basis. Experts in SEO and business owners trying to optimise their websites try to gain as much information as possible about the technology the major search engines use so that they can try to improve the ranking of their websites in the search results these search engines provide. However, the search engines try to keep exactly how their search engine technology operates and the factors it takes into consideration when ranking different websites and web pages a secret to stop those involved in SEO being able to manipulate the search results unfairly. Search engines often change and develop the technology they use to ensure this manipulation can not take place and also to provide a better service to their users.

The search engines do provide us with some basic knowledge about the technology they have and this can also be advantageous for those that are using the search engines either to carry out searches or for the promotion of their business.

The Teoma algorithm is what the search technology at Ask has been based on since 2001. Teoma is now referred to by the name ExpertRank and is a piece of technology that Ask is incredibly proud of and that they believe enables them to provide searchers using their search engine with impressive results for any query that is carried out.

This algorithm used by Ask evaluates websites in terms of authority and those that are found to be the most authoritative will then be displayed to users so that they receive the most relevant and useful search results possible. The Ask search engine aims to offer searchers the best possibilities that may be suitable for their needs rather than offering them the biggest and possibly most successful businesses that have websites. Whilst the number of links a website has can be of significance, the algorithm used by Ask aims to identify experts within a certain subject and the popularity of these businesses within the topic are then identified for use. A number of different equations and factors are used by the algorithm to retrieve this kind of information and this is one of the reasons Ask states that it can provide searchers with a superior service to that of its competitors.

We at SEO Consult can help any business to optimise its website accordingly so that it will be ranked highly by the major search engines such as Ask, Google and Bing. Ask.com to work with Susan G. Komen for the Cure

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Ask.com is currently one of the most visited and used search engines other than Google and now has the opportunity to interact with many internet users in more ways than just offering them a search service. Ask.com has previously worked with Autism Speaks and has now revealed its ‘Search for Cure’ campaign which has been designed to fund further research into breast cancer.

Over the next year or so, Ask.com will be working on this campaign for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Starting in October, it will begin to ask its users to carry out simple tasks and offer small bits of information when they visit the Ask.com search page. Simple questions about breast cancer will be asked in order for relevant information for the charity to be gathered. Ask.com will then donate around 50 cents to the charity every time questions are answered by users and every time the Komen theme is added to the Ask.com homepage. It is estimated that Susan G. Komen for the Cure will receive an investment of around $1 million from Ask.com throughout this campaign which is set to run through until December 2010.

Many internet users enjoy spending a little time playing games, answering questions and viewing their results and this way they can take part in these tasks and also make a difference in the search for life-saving cures too. Those at Ask think this is an extremely important cause and so are trying to help the charity and the users of the Ask.com website as well.

By using Ask.com and taking part in the little tasks and other activities, vital funding can be generated for the charity and the research they carry out.

These activities and tasks will be available for participation at the Ask.com website throughout the month of October so anyone interested is urged to visit the site at least once during this time. After October, Ask.com will be revealing more ways it plans to raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure as this campaign will run for many more months into the future.

At SEO Consult we encourage our clients to work with the major search engines and optimise their websites for them appropriately. Ask.com is an important search engine that plays a significant role in the market of search. Ask.com uses its influence and popularity to help charitable causes and this means that those involved in search engine optimisation can have the opportunity to help too.

By optimising high quality websites for Ask.com and taking part in their pay per click advertising campaign advertisers can ensure users of the search engine will receive a better quality of results and will therefore be likely to use the site more often and contribute to the charity research and funding more often too. Not only can this be beneficial for a business and its search engine optimisation campaign, but is extremely important to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and its crucial research to find a cure for breast cancer.
