Is your design putting your site in peril?

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Site owners tend to think of site design and search engine optimisation as two entirely unconnected elements. When they first approach SEO, they might reconsider the structural aspects of their site, but the actual look of their pages might seem best left as is. What these owners don’t know is that the look of your site can have a huge impact on how both search engines and internet users view your site.

Design can affect how the search engines read your site. Some aspects of design can put blocks in the way of search engine spiders and prevent them from accessing the information you want. Bad design can also put your site users off, causing them to run straight back to their search results. This has a further impact on your site’s rankings.

Here are some of the things to avoid in your site’s design:

Site schizophrenia: You will occasionally come across a site that is significantly off-target in its design, compared to the rest of its industry. As your internet marketing plan has probably already shown you, your site needs to fit the image of your business. A financial consultancy site might stand out with a garish design in bright colours, but it will be for the wrong reasons.

Product pushing: It’s understandable to want to get your products out there, but being too pushy can put your site’s users off. Unless you’re a retail site like Amazon, you’re unlikely to get away with pushing your products right from the first page. It’s a better internet marketing strategy to ease your site’s users in to the sell gently.

This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t mention your products or prices on your home page. Internet users can be equally put off if they can’t find the product they’re searching for, and your products are probably keywords for your search engine optimisation. A brief mention is worthwhile on your home page, but save the hard sell for internal pages.

Lavish layout: Innovation is generally seen as a good thing, but sometimes it can be a little off-putting. Internet users expect a site to look a certain way when they click through from the search pages. If the site is completely different, it’s possible they might get scared and scurry back to the search engine.

Your site should stand out from its competitors, but don’t take it too far. Removing all recognisable design aspects of a regular site in your industry could act as a signal to site users that you’re trying something suspicious.

Confusing colours: It is possible to put users off just with colour. Think about some of the more colourful sites you’ve come across while wandering the net. It’s probably very rare for the bright colour scheme to have put you at your ease. Colour should be used with some consideration in your site design, and you can talk to our experts at SEO Consult Australia about your choices. Your industry will have its own standards that you can play with.

Are you still trying to impress the search engines?

For some, getting their website ranked in a top spot in the results of Google is all SEO is about. They want to be ranked highly be the search engines and all of their SEO efforts are targeted at achieving this goal. Every SEO technique used is done so for the purpose of getting noticed by the search engines and making it into their top rankings. This can be an unproductive technique.

Search engine optimisation is about improving your rankings but it is also about directing relevant traffic to your website and developing the brand of your company online. Search engines play a big role in SEO but they are not really what an efficient SEO campaign is about. The best SEO campaigns are those that are based on the wants and needs of the target audience. It is the target audience that you are trying to get to visit your website and purchase your products and so your SEO campaign must be aimed at them.

Learning this and how you can do it is best done by working with professional SEO consultants. Specialists in SEO will be able to give you a well-rounded view of search engine optimisation and a deep understanding of what SEO is actually about. It is those that work alone on their SEO campaigns that often develop the view that SEO is only about the search engines. Those that work with a professional SEO company have a better understanding of SEO and its practices.

Obtaining a top ranking in the search results is significant in SEO. A spot on the first page can mean a huge increase in exposure and in traffic visiting your website. However, the most effective way of getting these top rankings is by making your SEO campaign about your target audience as well.

If you create content which is useful for your visitors, build links so they can find their way round easily and communicate with them through social networking profiles, this will benefit them immensely. As your website and business will be so appealing and useful for visitors, the search engines will want to rank you in their search results.

SEO is not just about manipulating the search engines so they rank you highly but also about developing a quality website for your target audience. It is the quality websites that search engines want to rank highly because it is these websites that will be most helpful for their searchers. The quality of the websites the search engines suggest reflects on the search engine itself. If Google regularly displayed low quality sites at the top of its results, users would lose their respect and trust in the search engine.

When running an SEO campaign, it is your target audience you must work to impress, not the search engines. We at SEO Consult can develop an SEO campaign for your business that will make improvements for your target audience and will make you more appealing to the search engines too.
