It is widely acknowledged that the competition and rivalry between Google and Apple is increasing significantly. Apple has stated that Google is infringing upon its market more and more through the development of its new products and services and therefore the two companies are becoming competitors. This increased rivalry of course means that it is increasingly difficult for anyone to work and contribute to both of these large and extremely powerful companies.

Arthur Levinson has been on the board of directors at Apple since 2000 and also on the board of directors at Google since 2004. However, it seems he could no longer remain working for each company and has resigned from his post at Google. Whilst an official explanation for Levinson’s resignation has not yet been given, it is commonly believed that his decision to leave Google is based on the growing competition and animosity between Google and Apple.

The issue of conflict of interest for those on the board at Google and also on the board at Apple has arisen before with the case of Eric Schmidt who resigned from his position at Apple a few months ago. The FTC has been carrying out an investigation into the possible issues regarding trust for those who play a role on the board of Google and also at Apple. It is suggested that there is now too much of an overlap between the two companies and that this means board members can no longer remain loyal and productive if contributing to both Google and Apple.

It seems that Schmidt had urged Levinson to remain at Google for a little while longer while the FTC carries out its investigation but Levinson has obviously decided that this was no longer appropriate, that a decision had to be made and that the necessary decision was to leave the board at Google. The FTC has now dropped its investigation into the companies as no other members on either board play a role at both Apple and Google.

Apple and Google are sharing an increasing amount of the same turf with both companies offering internet browsers and mobile phone software and also with Google developing its own operating system, Chrome which is hoped to be operating successfully on laptops and personal computers by next year. However, Schmidt has remained confident that the two companies are still not direct competitors.

As Google is such a powerful and influential company any Google developments and activities are of significance. Google expanding and evolving demonstrates how keen the company is to remain at the top and that it is going to be one of the companies right at the forefront of the technology development. Google is currently the most popular and successful search engine in the world and so it remains of great significance for internet users and especially those with online businesses to be fully updated with what is happening at Google.
