Google has revealed a new news feature that it believes may change the way that readers learn and read the news when online. Living Stories is now part of Google Labs and is the product of a lot of work and development between Google, The New York Times and The Washington Post. The idea behind Living Stories is to provide readers with all of the information about a news story on one single page. This means that any updates and new information that becomes available about the news story will also be displayed on the same page so that readers interested in the story can follow it continuously.

When the reporting of a news story takes place online, information is often repeated when new developments occur and readers can struggle to identify the new information within the story quickly. Google hopes to tackle this issue with the development of Living Stories. A story reported on Living Stories will add new information appropriately to the same single page and highlight for the reader any new content that has been added since they last read the story.

Readers will be provided with a summary of the story at the top of the web page and within this summary new updates will be highlighted for the reader. The latest information reported about the story will be displayed at the top of the written piece and readers will also be provided with a filter at the side of the content which will consist of the main points within the story and a timeline so they can quickly view how moments within the story have developed. The fact that Google will be able to highlight new content for readers depending on when they last read the story so that it can inform them of new developments quickly and easily is a key feature of this project that Google believes will make a significant difference to how news is read online.

Google has stated that with the development of this concept and the necessary technology in order for it to work, it hopes to offer a similar opportunity in the future to publishers so that they can publish their work in a similar way, with new content being highlighted and easily identifiable for readers.

Living Stories is an exciting experiment for Google and Google is urging users to provide them with valuable feedback on it so that it can be improved further in the future to be even more useful and successful.

The development of new features and tools by Google signifies the power and influence of Google online and how it as at the forefront of technological developments online in many areas.
