The buttons below the search box are also bigger and the useful keywords suggestions from Google that appear in the drop down box when a search query is entered into the search box have also increased in size.
These updates to the websites make all the information clearer and also make it easier for the user to view the information in front of them. However, these changes do not represent any developments or alterations in the search technology that Google is using, they are just visual. Not only does the enlarging of the box and text on the Google homepage freshen things up for Google users and show them that Google is all about the new and improvement of what it has, it also shows that Google is very much concentrating on the search service that it offers and that this is obviously of great importance to the company. Marissa Meyer from Google suggests the super-sized search box can demonstrate to users the importance of search to Google and also that Google is the most powerful and capable search engine currently available and therefore that they can be assured that they are using the very best.
As search queries have recently been increasing in length and sophistication it is also possible that this larger sized search box was also created with this in mind. Google wants to provide searchers with an efficient and simple service that provides them with relevant, high quality information quickly and clearly and by increasing the size of the box it will certainly help some users view the information they are entering into the search box and the helpful suggestions made by Google easier and faster because it is displayed in a larger text. There are some users that are already complaining about this change but it is unlikely to cause any major upset because the developments have not been that drastic and do not affect the way Google carries out searches or displays SERPs.
Whilst the increasing of the search box and text on the Google homepage is not a revolutionary development from the Google team it does demonstrate to users the importance of search to Google, it does freshen up the look of the homepage showing users that Google is keeping up with the times and is fresh and exciting, and also gets those that use and work with the search engines in search engine optimisation once again talking about the mighty Google.
