In the past, Google has stated that the way it has become successful is by building up its customer base, one by one. Each time a searcher uses the Google search engine they are provided with relevant and useful results quickly and easily. It is this experience that encourages them to return to Google in the future. Google relies on the service it offers to increase its number of users and has claimed it does not have to openly advertise and target audiences in order to encourage searchers.

With the development of the Google TV ads, this has all changed. Google used a TV advertisement during the 2010 Super Bowl, a time when it was sure to be viewed by an enormous audience. Google has never before targeted such a wide range of potential users so obviously in the promotion of their search service. This has led some to believe that Google is feeling threatened.

The most obvious cause of this threat is the launch and development of the Bing search engine. Bing has used methods like this in the past to promote its services. At the time, Google responded by stating it was not an effective way of attracting users to a search engine but Google must now be considering things differently.

Google is currently the most popular search engine in the world and it continues to dominate the search market. However, despite this power Google has, it continues to show signs of feeling the pressure from Bing.

The first sign of Google recognising Bing as a major competitor took place just after Bing was officially launched. Bing was being highlighted for certain features and Google felt the need to let others know that it too had impressive features like this of its own. The ‘Explore Google Search’ page was created for this purpose. Bing created a TV advert and now Google has also aired an advertisement on the television. Bing is attracting followers and praise and it seems Google is reacting to the success of Bing by marketing its services more openly and aggressively.

Google is claiming it had not set out to create a TV advertisement and instead created some short online videos to show how searchers use the Google service. The video that was extremely popular with viewers was what was used as an advertisement during the Super Bowl. The fact Google felt the need to share this video with such a large audience does however reflect the aim of self promotion.

Google is extremely important in search but Bing is also becoming increasingly significant. This is clear from the results Bing is achieving and the way Google is responding. When running a search engine optimisation campaign, it is important to consider both Google and Bing.

We at SEO Consult will develop a search engine optimisation campaign for your business that will help you to work effectively and productively with Google and Bing so your website is a success.
