Is Google against the Microsoft and Yahoo! merger?

Since the announcement of the merger between the two companies Microsoft and Yahoo! in search, it has been well surmised by most involved in search engine optimisation, business and the internet that Google will object to this union for a number of reasons. Whilst Google has still not taken an official position on where it stands with the deal, information has been leaked about its attitude towards the venture and Google was also recently asked by the Department of Justice to offer its opinion on the matter and responded accordingly.

Google has been suggesting the issue of scale in search is not a good enough reason for this merger between Microsoft and Yahoo! to go ahead. It has been argued by the two companies that it is vital they combine powers in search so that they can compete with the mighty Google. Google is currently the most popular and successful search engine currently operating online and it has a huge majority of the market share. Microsoft and Yahoo! whilst still successful in their own right, are considerably behind and believe a joining of forces would put them in a stronger and more able position. Google is stating scale is not a good enough reason for this merger and Yahoo! and Microsoft are basing their argument for this merger to go ahead on the issue of scale.

Google has also been claiming that the deal between the two companies is not necessary because search growth is increasing for all of the major players in the market with results improving. Microsoft’s Bing has seen an increase in its market share and Google is using this information to demonstrate that Microsoft and Yahoo! can compete effectively in search as two separate companies.

Some at Google have been known to be expressing their views and options on the merger of Yahoo! and Microsoft with politicians, market regulators and journalists and this had led others to believe that Google is lobbying against the deal privately. Google denies this accusation and claims to have only responded on the issue when required to do so by the Department of Justice.

The investigation into this merger continues and it is not yet clear if the opinion of Google and the points it is trying to make will make a difference to the outcome or not. There have been few objections about this deal from marketers and advertisers and this will likely work in favour for the deal because such a merger will make such a huge difference for companies that do advertise in this way.

Yahoo! and Microsoft hope to make the market of search more competitive and it is possible that this will happen but Google will not allow this development to take place without sharing its views and opinions as to why it should not.

If this merger goes ahead it could mean some big changes in search and in search engine optimisation. At SEO Consult, we are already preparing for this development so that our clients will be prepared for any necessary changes that need to be made to their SEO campaigns so that they will be ranked highly by the Bing search engine.
