The influence of human reviewers on Google rankings

It is well known and understood that the search engines use a range of different algorithms in order to help them sort through the many, many websites that exist when they are trying to provide searchers with relevant and helpful search results.

These algorithms take into consideration numerous different factors when trying to evaluate a page for relevancy to a search query. These mathematical formulas that the search engines use are all different and are regularly changed in order to stop webmasters from being able to manipulate the search engines successfully and push their websites to the top of the search results unfairly.

Therefore, in general, internet users are not aware of what these algorithms are but try to optimise their websites in all kinds of ways, using previously successful SEO techniques and information because they know the importance of these algorithms and how their ranking within the search results of the major search engines depends on it.

However, recent comments made by Google show that whilst the ranking of websites is largely determined by the computer algorithms used by the search engines, it is not solely based on these algorithms. It is actually the case that human reviewers are involved in the ranking process and this is new and surprising information for many internet users. According to Scott Huffman from Google, around 10,000 human reviewers are currently working for the search engine.

Samples of queries and the results provided by Google are explored by these reviewers to check on the relevancy and quality of the websites Google is ranking highly. This means that whilst optimising a website for the search engine algorithms is of great importance in search engine optimisation, websites must also be created for human reviewers too. If trying to create and design a website primarily for the customer and the aim is to provide them with high quality content and user-friendly web pages then it is highly likely the website will meet the approval of the human reviewers.

The information provided by these Google reviewers directly affects the algorithms used by the search engine and how these algorithms change and develop in the future. This means that if unethical search engine optimisation methods are used it is possible to achieve high rankings quickly but it is highly likely that the human reviewers and the algorithms they affect will eventually push the website back down to the bottom of the rankings pile. Using ethical and white hat SEO techniques may mean it takes a little longer before impressive results are noticed but also means that the reviewers and the search engines will view the website more positively and will be more likely to rank it higher in the search results.

At SEO Consult we use a selection of white hat search engine optimisation techniques which means the websites of our clients are appealing to the search engines and will also be approved by human reviewers. The search engine optimisation campaigns of our clients are productive and ethical and feature the most up to date and proven methods to optimise and promote websites in the best way possible.
