Google has added another feature to its toolbar. Google Sidewiki allows visitors to leave comments on any web page they have visited. Positive and negative comments, opinions and thoughts are all acceptable and Google hopes that other visitors will then find this information helpful and informative. However, in order to leave and view comments, Sidewiki must be first be enabled by the user. Enabling Sidewiki is possible by following the simple steps given on the Google website.

Once you have enabled Sidewiki, it does not mean that all the comments you leave on a website will be shown to others users of this feature. Obviously, millions of people visit web pages every day and many of these users will leave a comment. Therefore, only certain comments will be chosen by Google to be displayed which means once again, Google will be using a system to rank the information appropriately. Google only wishes to display posts of the highest quality and the ranking algorithm it uses will take into consideration many factors.

The language used in the content of the comment is of significance. Complicated and detailed sentences are more likely to be ranked highly than short comments that feature slang and unsophisticated terms. Google has the technology to explore the sophistication of the language used and can actually use this technology when dealing with fourteen different languages.

Another factor that will be taken into consideration in the ranking of comments on Sidewiki is the reputation of the user who is posting the comment. How other posts from this user have been ranked by Google will be considered and will make a significant difference. The user history will be examined even further than this with the exploration of details such as how long the user has been registered and how often comments are posted by the user both being considered in the ranking process.

The Sidewiki feature could possibly have a big influence over the online reputation of businesses in the future. Depending on the types of comments left by users of a site, visitors could be strongly influenced and as whether to trust and use the services of a business or not.

However, it is not yet time for businesses to panic about the comments that are going to be left on their sites and the potential influence they have over visitors who arrive on their web pages. Many comments that are made by users will not actually ever be shown and only those of high quality and that are contributed by a user with a good and long reputation with Sidewiki are likely to be featured.

It will be some time before we see if Sidewiki is a success. It is a tool for consideration for those involved in search engine optimisation because of the affect it can have on a business and visitors to its website. At SEO Consult, we can help all businesses use reliable and proven SEO techniques as part of their campaigns and also implement new tools and methods when appropriate.
