Will Google mean the end of newspapers?

There are often claims that the actions and developments of Google are damaging the newspaper industry. The habits of those reading the news in terms of how they find information are changing and Google is held responsible by some for these changes and for less people reading newspapers. However, Google CEO Eric Schmidt does not believe that the services they provide are threatening the existence of already well-established newspapers and believes that Google can actually help these newspaper institutions to survive.

Google does not produce news content itself and there are currently no plans for this development to occur. The aim of Google as far as news is concerned is to be able to direct Google users to sources of informative and relevant news content that can be trusted and that is of a high quality. Schmidt has suggested that it is only possible to receive content like this from the traditional newspaper sources.

Schmidt has also suggested that the way for newspaper institutions to survive is through the exploration of alternative methods. However, a decline in the number of people reading newspapers does not mean that newspapers will one day be no more. Many people regularly still purchase newspapers and they will always be a favourite for certain markets within society. Whilst it can’t be denied that more internet users are reading the news from sources online, there are some that will not part with the traditional newspaper. Google can also not be solely blamed for this development; even without Google users would still be accessing news online and so it is the threat of the internet as a whole that must be acknowledged.

Schmidt has also suggested that in the future online users will receive a more personalised news reading experience. He believes it will be possible that more and more users will access news online using all types of devices and that the services providing users with the news will be able to monitor important and useful details such as what a reader has already viewed and other stories that they may be interested in from their previous history. This type of service has already been in development with applications such as Google FastFlip and will rely heavily on the quality content of news sources. Therefore, the traditional news institutions that have the trust and respect of those wanting to receive the most accurate and up to date news could be successful in the providing of this type of online service with their news stories. Therefore, the news institutions currently creating the newspapers will still play a vital role in the providing of the public with the news and may ensure their survival through the development of this kind of news technology.
