Content misconceptions that kill your ranking

Website owners and optimisers are often at loggerheads over website content. Often issues come up during optimisation, as website owners don’t understand the search engine rules. They want to implement certain actions that will surely kill their website and business, but this is due to ignorance or lack of information.

Then again there are issues where website owners are prepared to cross the line between ethical and unethical practices. Unfortunately, results always turn out negative instead of positive, as website owners are convinced will happen.

Borrowing from other websites

People often argue that if websites do not have copyright on their web content then it means anyone can copy and paste that information onto their own websites. Whether a website has copyright or not, you can’t take their content and palm it off as your own on your website. The search engines spiders are not stupid, they compare articles and you will face penalties.

Keyword issues

Minimal content contains minimal keyword, unless you try and use keyword stuffing. Often website owners feel that there is no need for large amounts of text content. First of all, the less content, the fewer keyword opportunities. Minimal content also means you have nothing of value to offer your site visitors when they look for information. It is also not possible to just write anything on your website. Your content must be relevant to your business, so trying to use random blocks of text to be able to use keyword will not help at all. Your web pages must contain relevant and informative content that is fully optimised in a skilful way. This appeals to the search engines and will appeal to your site traffic as well.

Updating content

Often it is felt that writing unique web content is a laborious task that can easily be bypassed by simply syndicating articles from directories. Or it is simply felt that there is no need to keep updating content with new additions. This is because everything that you want to say is already there. A statement more than one optimiser has heard is: ‘my website is to create interest, not to educate users’. Thinking like this is the fastest ways to make the search engine spiders lose interest in your website. Insubstantial, syndicated and stale content will soon influence your site ranking negatively until you disappear off the SERPs.

Conclusion

Website owners and their optimisers have to work together in order to optimise a website fully. No reputable optimiser will use unethical practices for his clients as he is fully aware of the consequences. Taking content from others is seen as stealing by the search engines and they will penalise you. Not updating content is the surest way to drop down in the SERPS.

Site visitors will soon not come to your website either as you have nothing new of value to offer. Content is king, without sufficient content you have no appeal to the search engines and site visitors will move on fast to other websites that give them solid and plentiful information. Search engine optimisation and good quality content goes hand in hand, there simply are no shortcuts if you hope to get good ranking.
