When SEO goes bad

Everywhere in life there are people doing things the right way and doing things the wrong way and this is so with SEO as well. Black hat optimisation is a way to try and bread the rules and regulations of the search engines by using unethical practices. This is by way of non-visual and visual presentation to the search engines spiders and the web users. This results in poor user experience as the results are not accurate when users do searches. There are many different black hat tricks that people try to put one over on the search engines.

Keyword stuffing

This is when keywords are stuffing into the text and the code to make sure the spiders see lots of keywords. This results in web pages that are unreadable for humans. Keywords are stuffed not only in the content that web traffic must read. Black hat tricks stuff keywords into the Meta tags, title tags, alt tags and through invisible text and comment tags. Search engines are not stupid.

When they realise what a website is doing, they will use filters to reduce the artificial ranking the website is going for. Ultimately the search engines can and will ban such a website from the SERPs. Keyword stuffing is also known as search engine spamming.

Hidden text is an old black hat trick where text is hidden in the background colour of a web page. Humans cannot see it, but it presents the search engine spiders with a multitude of keywords. Obviously the search engines are on to this trick, so now black hat optimisers hide the CCS [cascading style sheets] to hide the text. Bottom line is that the search engines consider anything as cloaking that the website visitors cannot see, but the spiders can.

Redirects, cloaking and doorway pages

These are three of the most popular black hat SEO tricks in the book. Cloaking is using any technique whereby humans see a different page than what the search engines see. Doorway pages are usually not part of the website’s normal navigation. They only exist to push up rankings in the SERPs. These pages have zero value for humans and are normally just lines of utterly meaningless text. Redirect pages are keyword stuffed landing pages that are deliberately created. These redirect the user very fast to the real page and are not meant to have any value for the user. Their sole reason for creation is to push the ranking up and users are not meant to read those pages.

Google advice

Google spells it out bluntly that website owners must not deceive users or present content to search engine spiders that are different to what users see. To avoid penalization or being banned for unethical practices avoid using hidden links or text. Never employ devious redirects or cloaking and do not load up pages with completely irrelevant words.

Avoid creating sub domains, domains and multiple pages that basically have duplicate contents. Avoid creating doorway pages as well as using affiliate programs with very little or no content that is original. This is good, basic advice from Google and if ignored, the consequences are clear for any website; penalties and change of being banned.
