During the mid 1990’s, the internet really began to develop and take off and the number of websites available for internet users to visit increased significantly. With more and more websites being created and becoming available, it meant that a way for people to find these websites and sort through the many that were out there was necessary and this is where the development of the search engines began. With the creation of search engines came the need for a process to help the search engines determine how and in what order different websites would be displayed. This led to the idea of search engine optimisation.
In the early days of the search engine, it was only necessary for a website to submit their web address to the search engine and then wait for them to do the rest. The search engine would send a crawler or web spider to the website to explore it and extract relevant links and words. This information would then be stored on the search engine server and used when a relevant query was made.
The algorithms initially used by search engines concentrated a lot on details provided by the webmaster of the website. Meta tags were of great significance during this time for giving search engines an idea of what a website was about and what type of content it featured but unfortunately proved an unreliable method for ensuring that the websites were actually relevant to the query. Often, webmasters would manipulate the meta tags meaning that what was said to be present on a certain web page, was not actually the case and therefore not relevant to the user. The content of websites was regularly misrepresented in search engine results due to inaccurate meta tags.
In order for users to continue using search engines, the search engines had to develop more complex algorithms for the ranking of search results in order to try and reduce the amount of manipulation carried out by webmasters. These algorithms featured more information from the websites and information that the webmasters did not solely control.
Sergey Brin and Larry Page created a search engine that used a mathematical algorithm in order to monitor the importance and popularity of pages on the web. This explored the idea of links to a website and how the quality and quantity of links could affect the likelihood of a user finding the website. Brin and Page then became the founders of Google which was established in 1998. Google and search engines like this began to consider a number of factors when determining the ranking of search results and different algorithms were adopted to attempt to avoid ranking manipulation and ensure that search engine users received the most relevant and helpful results.
