If you want your SEO to be effective, your keywords shouldn’t stand alone. Keyword relevance, which is at the heart of on-page search engine optimisation, is judged by what surrounds the search terms, not just the presence of the terms themselves. For this reason, you need to build a keyword vocabulary.
For example, say you’re selling purple boots. Your main keyword is likely to be something like ‘designer purple boots’ with a long tail keyword of ‘buy quality designer purple boots.’ Those two keywords aren’t the only words you’ll need to build relevance on your page, so you need to work out a list of related terms to aim for.
1. Brainstorm. Jot down any words that are associated with your keywords, ones that can be used throughout various pieces of text. For our example, we end up with things like ‘designer wear,’ ‘purple leather,’ and anything related to the boots and who wears them.
2. Think about rephrasing. A good way to boost relevance without tipping keyword density filters is to rework the keyword. For our example, ‘purple boots as designer wear’ and ‘quality purple boots with designer style’ are two options. You can talk to our experts at SEO Consult Australia about how to safely rephrase keywords.
3. Start creating content. The good news is that once you have a list of terms, you probably have a rich source of article ideas as well. When you’ve brainstormed and reworked, it’s time to get started on your SEO content.
