Yes, it is fact that Google is the biggest search engine out there and this is because the most searches on the Internet are done through Google. Google has grown this strong because they have the reputation for delivering and that is after all what it is all about. All businesses want Google to pick them up and list them well in the search results pages.

For many people it has become of far less importance to check how their websites are ranked on the other big players; MSN and Yahoo. It is all about how Google ranks their website and/or specific web pages that they have done in-depth search engine optimization on. Google changes their algorithms regularly to try and make searches more specific and everyone scrambles to try and keep up.

Unfortunately for many business and website owners Google watching has turned into an utter obsession. They fanatically watch their ranking and stress and worry if it slips one place.

Obsessions of any kind are detrimental to a person as the obsession makes one lose sight of other aspects that are equally important. In the case of SEO and Internet marketing those aspects that become neglected are keeping your website in top-top shape and addressing the needs of your site visitors and potential customers.

Reality

Put yourself into the shoes of a search engine and then ask yourself what you would be looking for in a website to give it that coveted high search page ranking? It is always of value to have a general idea what search engines target when they crawl a website.

To have a successful website, you do not have to know the smallest detail. What search engines look for is relevance to the exact keywords and phrases that your target audience is searching with.

Only an advertisement

You do not sell to the search engines; they are not your potential clients. Google gets you listed out there, but if you neglect your Search Engine Optimisation efforts on your website, the SEs are not interested. Remember, search engines cannot reason like humans, they have their own criteria for relevance. Yes it is important to rank well, but you do not have to be in first place to have a successful business.

Your SEO has to be target driven and in this case the target is your website traffic. The website ranking above you only has better advertising than you, it does not mean he has a better product or caters to his clients better.

Customer is king

Where does Google direct your target market; to your website of course. Google washes its hands of you once the visitor lands on your homepage. It is up to you to provide your visitors with such an excellent experience on your website that they will be hooked.

You have to cater to their needs and provide them with the best quality information; you have to go that extra mile. How do you do that? SEO is the answer; each and every aspect of your website must be optimized to please your visitors and make it easy for them to find what they want.
