Most people think that keyword optimisation automatically means the web page and website is search engine friendly. Everyone knows how critically imports keywords are, many forget that there are other factors that make a website friendly to search engines. What we see when we look at the website look optimized, but the spiders look at things differently.
Often the optimisation effort is done correctly from the start, but things tend to go wrong. That is why it is always stressed to clients by their SEO consultant that optimisation is an ongoing task. Many times problems only come to light once the web spiders start crawling. This is when the SEO goes into detective mode and start looking for where the problems are hiding. There are a couple of red flags that hampers the web spiders, thus turning your website unfriendly.
Duplication
Often people do not realise that when their website has unoptimised pages, even when those pages will be optimised at a future date, this impacts on how the spiders see the website. The reason for this is that unoptimised pages often have description and title tags that are the same. What happens is that these pages act as a dragline and holds the website back. When the spiders see these duplications, the value of the site overall drops. Thus the chances of the entire site being indexed become smaller. The only way to cut that dragline is to take the time and effort to optimise each and every page.
Replica pages
Duplication of content is another issue that makes a website unfriendly to be crawled. E-commerce sites are prone to content duplication as they sell the same products as many other websites. To minimise this type of duplication, write a unique paragraph of text for each category of your products. Duplicated content also happens when your content is stolen and it’s worth the trouble to protect your content. When you publish content that has great value and republish it on other websites it can cause problems. Too much publication of the same content can cause your content to become devalued.
Links
Top priority for search engines is the ability to navigate your website. This makes your internal links of the utmost importance. There are two ways for internal links to be established. by linking to the content within your website from one page to another page that is relevant. Linking is also done through the navigation; primary and subsidiary. If you overburden your navigation with links, the search engines will not likely received the information they need. They will not be able to establish which pages is priority or not.
Internal linking must be done expertly to satisfy both the search engine needs and the needs of visitors to the website. These are some of the most important issues that must be watched and addressed as soon as they crop up, otherwise the search engines will not be keen to keep crawling your website. There must always be perfect balance between the needs of visitors and search engines.
