One of the biggest issues and concerns when using a search engine to locate some information is relevant information actually being displayed. Ensuring that users are offered suitable and relevant results is very important and necessary in order for a search engine to operate effectively and increase their number of users.

There are a number of ways that search engines try to monitor the relevance of the search results being displayed. These methods all have advantages and disadvantages which is why new trials and ideas are being tested and proposed in order to increase efficiency.

The option of humans checking the relevancy of results offered by a search engine has been used in the past. However, due to the vast amounts of information needing to be assessed this can require a large amount of time. Using human reviewers to cover such a great deal of information is viewed as unrealistic as an efficient and complete technique as humans would never be able to measure for relevance the many search queries that are carried out by search engines. This method is also vulnerable to the person who is monitoring the results manually making a mistake and therefore making their findings inaccurate.

Yahoo recently had the patent on a new process granted. This process involves the use of an algorithm to identify how relevant the results are. When a user types their search query into a search engine, the search engine uses the algorithm in order to provide the user with relevant results. The algorithm used by the search engine is based on importance and relevance of the information on web pages that are produced from the query. Yahoo has proposed that a testing interface is needed in order for those developing search engines and search algorithms to be able to check the search results produced.

This process patented by Yahoo suggests the use of related terms to determine what search results are produced. If an ambiguous term is entered and searched for by the user, the search engine will display a range and variety of results based upon this term. In order to do this, the search engine will look at the query history and information to increase the likelihood of providing the user with something useful. By offering the user a variety of possibly relevant results, they are more likely to be successful in giving the searcher what they are looking for. When a search query is entered, the top related terms and frequency of these terms will be used to determine what is displayed. The time of day, day of the week, time of year and other time variables may also be considered and may affect the query logs that are referred to.

Results displayed by search engines are of great importance and understanding how and why the results suggested are done so by the search engine is also key.
