Research has recently shown that Baidu is currently a surprisingly large search engine globally with millions of users regularly using the search engine for their search queries. This impressive result for the search engine means that more and more of those that are involved in internet marketing are looking into the possibilities provided by Baidu and considering whether a presence on this search engine might be beneficial for their business if it trades on a global scale.

If a business already has links in China then this can immediately be beneficial. It can also be extremely helpful if you or a member of your staff can read and write in Chinese. If this is the case, it is possible to use the advertising program Baidu currently offers its users and advertise on the search engine in this way. If you cannot read and write in Chinese then there is also international support offered to help you to advertise on the search engine but the process can be more time-consuming and difficult if this option is chosen.

In the past, Baidu has only offered a paid opportunity for businesses and these listings would be displayed on many of the first pages of the results provided by the search engine. However, the paid results have now been moved to one section of the results page and it is now possible for businesses to be featured in the organic results section the search engine has created. Many of those involved in search engine optimisation are finding this an interesting development.

The same SEO techniques that are regarded as vital for optimisation with other search engines such as Google and Bing are viewed as significant for optimisation with Baidu too. This means that high quality content, appropriate links within the website so it can be navigated easily, and the creation of relevant and quality titles and such like will all help your website to be ranked highly in the organic search results of Baidu.

However, there are some major differences in the optimising of a website for Baidu and these must be acknowledged. In order for a website to be featured in the search results of Baidu, the website must be in Chinese. Content created using simple and relevant Chinese words is of great importance if you are going to rank highly. It is also recommended though not demanded that a website is hosted in China if it is going to be ranked highly in the search results as websites which are local are more likely to be located by the crawlers and indexed appropriately. Another way to increase the chances of your website being ranked highly by Baidu is by having the most important and relevant content within your website displayed at the top of the first pages of the site. The crawlers used by the search engine have a limited capacity due to connectivity issues and therefore may only search a small amount of content within a website.

For businesses that are targeting a Chinese audience, having a website ranked highly by Baidu could be a significant step in targeting this audience effectively. However, being ranked highly by Baidu is not an easy task and professional assistance will likely be needed. At SEO Consult, we can advise you about optimising your website for many different search engines and help you to use these techniques efficiently and productively so that the ranking of your website in the results of these search engines is improved.
