There are some techniques in SEO that have come under review and no longer reputable techniques in this industry. Black hat SEO is used today but it is frowned upon. One of the techniques that were widely used in the past was keyword stuffing.

When the realization hit that page rankings are king and make the difference between a company making hundreds and millions of pounds in revenue the unethical practices of SEO jumped up just as quickly as the ethical practices did.

It used to be that businesses could have been very opinionated and simply taken a “so what” attitude but when search engine giants began to look unfavourably on certain techniques the line was drawn in the sand and compliance became a determinant of success.

Trying to beat the system

Throughout history there have always been those who would seek to gain by doing things unethically. Sometimes their methods were downright illegal and yet driven by greed these people took great risks to make a quick buck.

Building a reputable business should not be a gamble, unless the business one is starting is a casino. Employing outdated techniques, whether ethical or unethical, really does not result in much and with the regulations stipulated by internet search engines the probability of creating success by not so ethical means is really not a viable option.

Still there are people out there to would seek to push the limits to see if they can get away with beating the system. In this technological age, while there are the few that for a time are able to get away with unethical practices, their glory is very short lived.

Using the bad to get the good

Keyword stuffing, although an outdated practice, was used as a white hat and black hat technique respectively. In creating security systems to protect the ethical values of trade and business on the internet, many times unethical practices had to be employed to design blocks against those very techniques.

So while there is a use for these frowned upon techniques, they are best kept to designing better process for the rest of the business to compete fairly and openly on the internet. Many businesses suffer great loss when banned by sites and have often dissolved their sites and started all over again doing the process the correct way.

So in wrapping up this article careful attention should be paid to the reasons for employing rather unethical processes in strengthening a company’s page presence. If used for the betterment of the process then surely these businesses should be commended for their contributions to fair play and if not then sufficient planning should be made to face the consequences.

All is fair in business when everyone plays by the rules. With such a great medium as the internet to create and sustain wealth, serious businesses should really research the consultants they use for SEO to ensure that their business does not come into disrepute as a result of unethical practice.
