This is a fast growing market, offering the same standards and benefits of SEO via computers, the main difference between SEO conducted via a computer and a mobile phone is the size of the screen which in turn affects the user’s experience.
Mobile phone users who use their phones to search the web want immediate results with the least possible navigation as possible and want sites with the least imagery and design detail possible. They want content that is given in small servings and which is precise and to the point and for this reason it is not possible to duplicate computer web pages for mobile phone users, they need to be adapted instead.
There are a host of traditional SEO techniques that apply to Mobile phone webpage’s, yet there are also a few differences in how search engines treat these two platforms.
Optimise your site for mobile phones
You won’t need a particular URL for mobile SEO, you can either adapt your current website or you can create a version of it on a mobile domain, or mobi. It is less risky however to adapt than duplicate though. The ease with which a user navigates and moves around a normal desktop often becomes a frustrating experience for mobile users, so the information you are providing must take this into account and be tailored for mobile phone use. This is one the main reasons why duplication is not a good idea; another is more obvious reason is that duplicating web pages infringes on most search engines policies regarding black hat techniques, something that is simply unacceptable and which carries serious consequences. Always follow ethical guidelines set out in traditional SEO processes as the same risks and penalties apply.
It will be necessary to keep your pages simple and heavily text based so that they are easy to navigate and only place content that is absolutely relevant, minimal and easy to read. Use fonts that are not too small or too big and make your navigation tools clear and visible and easy to locate.
Use all the traditional SEO processes and techniques to optimise mobile phone searches, still use keywords, relevant content, headlines, and links as well as page tittles and a sitemap for indexing. In order to get indexed you need to submit a sitemap, this applies to mobile SEO as well, when submitting ensure that each of your pages has at least one incoming links pointing to it.
Use valid code such as XHTML 0.1 at all times as mobile phone search engines cannot assimilate code but if your code is valid they wont have a problem indexing it.
You will need to be compatible with all platforms as not everyone uses the same mobile phone, keep to a standard format for hand held devices as well as server versions for the most popular mobile devices. You need to ensure that your pages are visible within the screen size, and this will help. Google recommends sticking to design standards within the W3C specifications, guidelines and tools
