The term ‘RSS’ commonly stands for ‘Really Simple Syndication’ but can also refer to ‘Rich Site Summary’. RSS Feeds are a type of web feed that are used by web pages that regularly update and change the information that is published on them. Websites featuring news headlines, audio and visual information and blog entries are all commonly those that will have established RSS feeds. The major benefit of RSS feeds is that updated information can be viewed by the internet user quickly and easily without them having to visit each website where the feed was taken from. This can be very advantageous for the internet user. The main advantage for the publisher of the information is that their content is automatically syndicated.

An RSS feeder or aggregator is software that is required in order to read the information provided in the feeds. When an internet user visits a website and decides they would like to receive updates of any newly published information on this site, they can either enter the uniform resource locator of the feed into the reader or can click on the RSS icon displayed on the web page and following the necessary directions.

RSS feeds can be useful in increasing the amount of traffic to a website and therefore can play an important role in search engine optimisation. By creating appropriate feeds with the idea of website promotion in mind, you can increase the number of visitors to your website.

The channel title is the first place to begin when trying to create a search engine friendly feed. Include keywords and genuine details as to what content the feed contains. This information can be important in attracting visitors to the website so try to evoke interest with the information given but always make sure that this information is relevant to the content within the web pages so that it is correctly indexed by any search engines or directories. Try to avoid using HTML in the channel title and if the company name is to be included, try to feature it at the end of the title rather than at the beginning.

The channel description offers you the opportunity to give further details of the content of the feed. Write it for the target audience and not the search engine crawlers but do remember to include keywords that are relevant to your content. Again, try to get readers interested and try to entertain them with the information given.

The optimisation of the entire web feed for search engines must be constantly considered. The content in a feed plays a vital role in the encouragement of users to click through so quality is key.

RSS feeds can be an important part in search engine optimisation and more and more websites are setting up feeds. There are many different ways you can optimise your feeds to improve the search engine ranking of your website and increase the traffic. We at SEO Consult can help you use RSS feeds to benefit your business and increase your success.
