Most people are familiar with the basics of optimisation; keywords, content, Meta tags and the rest. There is another SEO effort that holds huge benefits for all business websites. Cascade style sheets [CSS] website layout is not a new concept.

It was not widely implemented for it lacked the browser support needed, but now things have changed. People still stall in converting their websites to CSS though.  Today statistics show that more than 99% of all browsers support CSS so limited browser support is no longer an issue. There are several reasons why it is cost effective to change to CSS website layout for any business.

Not bandwidth hungry

File sizes for CSS web pages are approximately 50% smaller than for table layout pages. If you have a high traffic website, this leads to colossal savings. With table layout pages all the presentation information is placed inside the HTML. Whereas with CSS this information is placed in an external document. Java Script rollovers can also be replaced by CSS that brings huge overall reduction in page size.

Downloads much faster

Download speed is SEO? Yes it is most definitely. When your website takes too long, visitors become annoyed and go onto the next website that may download faster. You increase the usability of your website with a fast download speed. According to the source, Jacob Nielson, the chances of converting visitors can be up to 100% with a CSS website. Web pages with tables have to be read twice by browsers for content and structure.

Table web pages do not appear bit by bit, a reader will only see the web page once it has fully downloaded. Table web pages require much more code than CSS web pages that affects download time. CSS allows faster loading content pop up before slower loading content such as images. Website visitors find this very appealing.

Higher ranking, further reach

Search engines love CSS web pages because pages are more accessible to the web crawlers because it uses cleaner code. In contrast to table pages, with CSS can use the top of the HTML document to place important content. What this means is that your webpage will be ranked higher on the search results page. This brings your webpage to the attention of far more browsers. Hugely important is the fact that a website using CSS design is accessible with mobile phones, web TV, PDAs and in-car browsers.

The CSS it is possible to create an extra CSS document for handheld devices so users of these devices can call up this page. This option of a special page for handheld devices is not available to websites using table layout. This immediately increases the reach of your website tremendously. Large websites balk at the laborious task of switching to CSS website layout as it is time consuming. Weighing up the higher search engine ranking, the faster download time and greater reach, it is all worth it. This is SEO with a difference and most definitely worthwhile.
