Content is important to your site, and not just as part of your search engine optimisation plan. Although it’s true that the search engines are more likely to visit your pages if you update your content frequently, there are other people to consider – namely, your site’s users.

Obtaining the ranking you want is only half of the equation for SEO. If your content fails to interest your site users, your site will not achieve what you want it to do. Furthermore, if users bounce off your pages too frequently, you can kiss your good rankings goodbye.

So, how do you please your site users with your content? A list of interesting topics and a reliable source of information is a good start. You can discuss content with us at SEO Consult Australia. Before interesting information can be of much help to you, you need to ensure your site users will read it. To do this, you need to ensure that your content avoids the more annoying mistakes that internet writers make.

There are five things you absolutely must avoid if you want an internet user to take in the information on your site:

1. Spelling errors. It’s such a small thing, but having spelling errors in your content can make a major negative impression on your site users. It may seem petty for internet users, many of whom may not renowned for their spelling prowess, to get in a huff over the odd typo. The truth is that small mistakes are a distraction which jerks the reader away from the text. Even one or two spelling mistakes on a page can put the professional image of your business into question.

2. Incorrect punctuation. Punctuation acts as a signal on the road of communication. A comma or full stop in the wrong place pulls the reader over when all they want to do is speed ahead:

Its really, annoying to come across incorrect punctuation isn’t it.

Bad punctuation also leaves room for confusion. With that in mind, it’s worth checking over your content for these kinds of basic errors just to ensure that the message delivered is the one you want to send.

3. Exhibiting Commonly Confused Words Syndrome. Some words are prone to mix-ups. It’s best to get them right. They’re, their and there; your and you’re; its and it’s; these are all things that a decent writer will pick up on. More difficult ones to spot include ’stationary’ and ’stationery’, ‘accept’ and ‘except’, and ‘bought’ and ‘brought’. Mistakes are understandable, but a good proof-reading session should pick them up. This is something that goes across the board with writing, and is just as annoying on the net as it is anywhere else.

4. Letting your sentences run on. Punctuation is there for a reason. Let it do its job. Reading text aloud can help to pick up any errors.

5. Losing track of the subject. This is another small but annoying point. Swapping from ‘it’ to ‘they’ to ‘he’ when describing something, or matching plural verbs to single subjects, makes your content look bad.
