A few years ago Microsoft revealed some exciting research that they had been carrying out which could significantly change the way that search engine optimization (SEO) operates. This information featured details on the Vision-based Page Segmentation Algorithm, a technique which would allow the structure of websites to be broken down. This would mean that search engines would be capable of dividing web pages up and even identifying which parts were of greater importance and significance. These technological developments could have major implications for the way search engines work and the search engine optimization industry.

Other companies are also now exploring this idea, making it more likely to be something that we are all likely to encounter in the near future. Yahoo has recently produced a patent for automatic website segmentation which is receiving a lot of interest.

Page segmentation would have many benefits for search engines and that is why this idea is receiving so much attention. Being able to break down the web pages and analyze it appropriately will allow search engines to be able to provide searchers with relevant information depending on their specific query. The more broken down the pieces of information are, the more likely that what is shown to the person searching for something will be relevant and of interest. Often a search engine may struggle when trying to identify important content from non-important content when searching on pages of a website. Extra and irrelevant terms and links on a page may mean that someone is directed to a website that isn’t that relevant to the user.

A website and the content within it may be broken down into sections to analyze the information in smaller and more manageable portions. Advertising, heading and main content would likely be some of the divisions made. Those that are related could then be linked, and others could be broken down further into smaller parts. The main content section of a website would then likely be viewed as the most significant part of the website when searching for relevant information.

The division of a web page may also be beneficial for websites which feature information on a number of different topics. Being able to divide information on these topics could be useful when directing people to the relevant place. The information displayed in search results may also be more detailed and relevant to the search term if it is taken from the main content of the website. It will therefore be able to inform people about the website quicker and help them decide to click through.

If you have a website and want your website to rank highly in Google or other search engine results then web page segmentation is something should be considered. With techniques like this, certain content will be regarded as more important and some deemed as less so.

Reputable search engine optimization companies have been looking at these developments for years now.  At SEO Consult, we tailor our services appropriately to ensure our clients are fully up to date with their SEO internet marketing.
