1. Jump in.

It’s worth registering a profile with any site that seems to be on the up. This way, you guarantee ownership of your chosen user name, making it easier to manage your reputation. Whether you participate is a decision to be made later.

2. Research.

Without knowledge of each new site, you can’t be sure it’s worth spending your time there. With every social site, it’s worth dipping into forums frequented by your target market to see what they’re thinking.

3. Select.

You can’t be everywhere at once. Select two or three social sites to make your focus, and build up your presence in these communities with ten minutes of daily interaction.

4. Delegate.

For the less important sites, allocate some weekly time to keep your hand in. This will help build your general presence, but keep your social time to a manageable level.
