Language is a huge barrier on the internet and it is vitally important that it does not cause any problems on your website. The biggest culprit of that language barrier is jargon. There are so many websites out there that use industry related jargon that simply baffles visitors. So what is jargon and is your website a language offender? Jargon is the term given to area specific language.

You see, each country has its own slang that is used nationally. Then, each city has its own slang that gets used by the majority of the people in that city. Then, each area in a city or even a town has its own slang. That is a lot of slang; then you can add to that the different jargon that each business and industry uses. It can all become extremely alienating and confusing for your visitors. It is your job to be language neutral, if you use any type of slang at all, your website can be considered a language offender and you need to fix it.

Homework and research

When it comes to eliminating any alienating jargon from your website, lots of research is involved. You need to look into what jargon you are using and what you can use as alternative. Research is something that is a part of your SEO, no matter what stage your website is in. Your website can be long established, you will still need to do regular research into various subjects.

This subject is language. One of the important parts of language research for your website is keyword research. Jargon can be laced through your website in the form of you chosen keywords. Yes, your keywords can be jargon too. For instance, if you are using the keyword ‘Cetacean’ instead of ‘whales and dolphins’ you are going to attract a completely different target group of traffic. Not only that, but your traffic volume will be significantly lower too. A large part of your website’s success comes down to the language that you use.

Simple, plain English

When it comes to serving a wide selection of people as your target audience, it is important to take a myriad of factors into consideration. You need to think of their natural language use, their level of education, social standing and much more. You never want to talk over the heads of your audience or talk down to them, belittling their intelligence and understanding. If there is a simple, plain and much used English word for something, use that word above jargon. It will make things far easier and everyone will be able to understand what is going on.

Make it work for you

The important thing about the language used on any website is that you have the chance to make it work in your favour. You need to speak to your audience, convince them, make them trust you and create loyalty. Language is a fantastic thing because you can build your business empire on it. Give it a go and see just how effective it really is.
