There is a basic set of things website owners are always warned against, such as keyword stuffing, cloaked text and other spam tactics. This is as it should be, but there are other blunders that really have serious effects on a website. Yet people blunder along most often times not realising what it is they had done. Website owners often do not understand the consequences that a single action can result in.
Removing a web page that get steady traffic from the search engines because you want to refocus on a speciality item is a bad idea. Instead, add a speciality page and allow your other page that does not focus on your speciality to bring in that steady web traffic. Adding value is the way to go, not removing value because you want to switch focus. If the page were bringing in zero traffic, it would need tweaking.
Not paying attention to analytics
Too often website owners feel that using an analytics program is too much effort and too complicated, so they ignore the vital data produced by analytics. It is vital for a small business owner to become educated in the use of analytics. The survival of the website depends on this. If possible, then relegate the task of studying the data to a specific employee so that you can adjust your marketing and advertising to meet the needs of your site visitors. An analytics program does not have to cost the earth. Google Analytics comes free and your PPC conversion as well as ROI data is integrated and tracks in this program.
Site traffic is not unintelligent
Site visitors are fully aware what underlined product names within text mean; they know it is a link to that specific product page. There is no necessity for an embedded text link that literally say “click here”. The keywords used in all embedded hyperlinks count for your ranking for your specifically targeted keywords.
This counts for keywords used in embedded external links as well. What you are saying to the search engine spiders is that ‘click here’ is a targeted keyword. If your website has any of these hyperlinks, it is a problem that must be fixed immediately.
Site navigation in image or stylized text
Never use anything else but text-based hyperlinks for your website navigation. You simply kill your website ranking by using stylized text, Javascript, Flash or Gif images for image based text for website navigation. Think about it for a moment; the embedded links on your website lead to the web pages that are most important.
The embedded links tell the search engines exactly what is on each of the pages you link to. The spiders cannot read stylized text, Flash or images. So in reality you are telling them in your embedded links that those pages linked to contain nothing.
Your embedded links are vitally important; do not give the search engine spiders ‘nothing’ through imagery and never use generic text words such as ‘products’. You are wasting an opportunity to highlight your keywords to the spiders.
