Different websites obviously take different amounts of time to fully load and this can vary quite a lot. For example, a website that features a lot of images will normally take longer to load successfully than a website that is based on a lot of text.

Yahoo has recently filed a patent application that considers how search engines could treat different web pages differently depending on their load time. How these pages are ranked and found are both issues within this patent. The search engines gather and use many varying types of information when crawling the internet for web pages and categorising and ranking these chosen pages. There are many different factors to take into consideration but it is possible the loading time of web pages could be an additional factor for thought.

However, this patent from Yahoo! is exploring more than the time it takes for pages to load and how this could affect search results. It is considering how quickly a web page can be accessed and how this may vary for different users depending on the type of connection they are using, how long it takes for different pages to load and how this may vary depending on the browser that it is being used by the user and also how the internet users behave to websites when they behave differently in these two areas. The reaction of a user to a website is very important in showing website owners what they are looking for and what they are willing to tolerate in terms of performance and why.

The Yahoo! patent suggests that these could be key issues for a search engine to consider because it can significantly help the search engine decide to crawl, classify and rank different web pages that are on the internet.

Websites that were found by the search engines to give users a high standard of satisfaction from the factors analysed could then be ranked higher in the search engine results. Search engines aim to offer their users the most relevant and useful information and by encouraging them to visit websites which other users have been satisfied with is a good way to do this.

This information gained from the experiences of previous users could also help search engines in the classification of different websites. Websites that feature a similar style of content and similar experiences from users could be categorised together.

Web crawlers base their visits to websites on various different factors. However, if information gathered about user experiences and what features and type of content may deter or encourage them to wait and explore a website is used by the search engines, they could prioritise which websites they visit based on how relevant the websites are and how patient and satisfied future visitors to the website are likely to be.

This patent form Yahoo! demonstrates the possibility of search engines taking into consideration how quickly a website can be connected to and how long its web pages take to load and how internet users respond to this when deciding which web pages should be visited by the crawlers and how they should be ranked in the search results.

The factors considered by the search engines are constantly developing and evolving. At SEO Consult we are always monitoring the search engines and the techniques they are using. By us gaining knowledge in how the search engines are operating we can help our clients carry out up to date and effective search engine optimisation campaigns.
