Search engine optimization is a complex and exact science. It is a delicate balance that you need to get right in order to gain a valuable position in the SERP rankings. However, there are many people that abide far too strictly to search engine optimization. Yes, you can over optimize your web page. You can essentially become a search engine optimization slave.

In doing so you are actually negating the entire purpose of your web page and you are detracting from your efforts to create and maintain a sustainable website. You really need to take the fact of over optimizing a website seriously. Over optimizing often panders to the notion that the search engines are godly and that they control all, especially SERPs. This notion is in fact an illusion, it will get you nowhere. A huge, fundamental part of your search engine optimization is accounted for in your website’s traffic. And not just any traffic at that, traffic that likes your website.

Pandering to the engines

Don’t do it, just don’t fall into the trap of catering exclusively to the engines. Search engines determine whether you sit at the top of page one of the SERPs or at the bottom of page ten. However, part of what makes them put you in a specific position is the amount of web traffic you get and whether people like your website or not.

Strangling your content with keywords, linking your website to death and neglecting your human audience are not going to get you far. You may see results at first. However, those results will diminish and you will see your site slipping as your site visitors go elsewhere. Soon you have gone from number one to number one hundred, all because you pandered exclusively to the SE bots.

The human element of SEO

Your search engine optimization has a human element, your visitors. Here’s how it works in your favour and why it is so important. The search engines account part of your ranking for the amount of web traffic that you attract to your website. If you do not cater to the human element, the attention the number one SERP spot is getting you will peter out.

Word of mouth will spread about your unsavoury website and fewer people will visit by the day. Eventually your number one spot will drop and continue to do so unless you step in to do something. You need to attract people and keep them interested so that they keep coming back.

Giving visitors what they want

You need to have valuable, entertaining or informative content on your page. Forget the Adsense advertisements, forget all your affiliates. Focus on your visitors. Give them content that will be a reason to keep coming back. If you don’t know what to say on a topic, research it till you have something good to say about it. Don’t just say something because you want to say something, say something because you have something worthwhile to say. Keep all the other aspects of search engine optimization in mind, but cater to your visitors first. Your human element is vital to search engine optimization.
