Other websites that link to you are telling the world that you are great; great enough for them to risk linking to you. Great enough that they want to tell their web traffic about you. There are a great many top rated websites that have not had updates in ages. That is testament to the fact that updating only works to increase your rating if you need to be updated. However, if you do not need continual renewal it is best to leave the updating alone.

That said, choose your links and updates carefully and wisely to maximize your SEO efforts and not minimize them. Search engine optimization is a continual progress and it is always evolving to keep the playing field level.
