There are millions upon millions of websites out there in the vastness of cyberspace. Each and every one of them is competing for a piece of prime real estate in that same cyberspace. This puts the competition factor quite high. Well that would be an understatement for sure. The competition on the internet for a prime spot is literally dog eating dog.

There is no fiercer competition anywhere else on earth. This means that you have to offer the search engines your best wares in order to get noticed. And unfortunately for those wanting to hitch a free ride, the engines are unbiased. They will evict you just as quickly as they would anyone else as soon as you stop offering only the best. In order to keep your spot in the ranking you need to ensure that you apply SEO factors to stay there.

Links

Linking is very important in modern search engine optimization. The people who link to your website are testimony of how popular your website is. It is also testament to your good reputation. The people you link to are also just as important. If you link to the wrong people it can bring your website down. This is how it works.

Internal and external

Other websites that link to you are telling the world that you are great; great enough for them to risk linking to you. Great enough that they want to tell their web traffic about you. This impresses the web crawlers and search engines. Impressiveness helps you climb the ladder of search result ranking.

On the other hand, part of your networking is also linking to other websites. No website is an island. You need to be very careful not to link to bad apples. Otherwise the engines are going to lump you into the same unsavory category. This is going to work you down the ladder of ranking.

Updates

Update only when you have to. Updating compulsively and obsessively each and every day isn’t necessarily going to boost your rankings. Websites that rely on daily updates such as news websites will benefit greatly from obsessive daily, or even hourly, updates. On the other hand, if you sell products or services you may not need to take the same approach. Updates get noticed, sure, but they can change your ranking for the worse as well. Updates can change your keywords and thus change where you stand in the rankings.

There are a great many top rated websites that have not had updates in ages. That is testament to the fact that updating only works to increase your rating if you need to be updated. However, if you do not need continual renewal it is best to leave the updating alone.

That said, choose your links and updates carefully and wisely to maximize your SEO efforts and not minimize them. Search engine optimization is a continual progress and it is always evolving to keep the playing field level. Keep yourself updated with the latest information and happenings for maximum SEO potency.
