Think about all of the SEO tools you could use for your site’s search engine optimisation. It’s a fair bet that most of these are computer-related, many of them probably types of software. One of the best tools you can have for your search engine optimisation campaign is something far simpler. It’s your office whiteboard.

It’s surprising how central a whiteboard can be to planning a good SEO campaign. If used the right way, your humble office whiteboard could be the hub of all of your best optimisation ideas. Here are just a few ways that your whiteboard can help.

  • Keyword brainstorming: Your office whiteboard is the place to start your keyword research, even before you get your SEO company on board. Your staff are excellent resources that you should make use of in the early days of your keyword research. Sitting down for a lengthy keyword brainstorming session should be at the beginning of any company’s optimisation campaign.

It is a good idea to have what you think are your central keywords written up at the start of the session. These will act as prompts as you think of related terms. Don’t forget to include slang terms or terms your customers might use. At the end of the session, you will have a comprehensive list that can get the analytical stage of keyword research rolling. You can talk to us at SEO Consult Australia about how keyword research works.

  • Site maps: Your site’s architecture will be analysed as part of your SEO and in most cases will have to be altered. The basic whiteboard is a great place to draw up a map of all of the existing links in your site, and plot out a better, clearer way of linking. Planning in this highly visual way will help you to place clear paths throughout your site for search engines to follow.

  • Text link anchors: Once your initial SEO plan is in place, your whiteboard can still come in handy as a testing area for link anchors. Any fresh content you post is a prime spot to add links to other pages. The anchor text to use for those links can be hard to figure out. It needs to contain keywords, but not be too long and provide clear indications of where the link leads to. Writing up the proposed text and asking staff what the link leads to is a perfect test.

It might seem like cheating that most of what your whiteboard is helping with here is thinking. The whiteboard may not be as sophisticated a tool as keyword analysis software or even your web design program. This doesn’t make it any less helpful to your SEO.

Planning is a part of search engine optimization planning that shouldn’t be underestimated. Decent planning sessions are central to any internet marketing campaign. A clean whiteboard and a working marker have been at the centre of thousands of the most successful search engine optimization campaigns, and it should be at the centre of yours.
