SEO efforts are the best way to get you noticed on the internet. Since the internet started up and began its journey to world domination, SEO has been with us. Simply put, without Search Engine Optimisation you cannot hope to ever be noticed, no matter what you are peddling or have to offer. And SEO doesn’t just mean making your website look good and seem attractive.  You actually have to offer your web traffic something worth while in order to prosper in page rankings. There are some SEO no-no’s that you need to avoid when designing, tweaking and setting up your website.

Gigantic Anything

We all know that saying that goes, bigger is better. Many people fall for that trap when they design their website. They fall for the idea that huge text, monstrously long pages and gigantic and unoptimised images will get themselves noticed. Bad news; it’s not going to get you noticed anymore than as an extremely uninteresting topic or repulsive webpage.  Small print can be hard to read, however large bold print is not the answer. This can leave your website looking amateurish and can make life difficult for your visitors.

Large text does not equal easy legibility. On the contrary, it can make it just as hard to read for visitors as miniscule text is. Huge photographs that are scattered higgledy-piggledy all over your webpage can distract and disorient your visitors. Not good; you need reasonably sized photographs that are properly optimized and arranged in an orderly fashion.

Optimizing your images includes making sure that they load quickly and that they are properly tagged. Loads of content stuffed onto lengthy web pages put visitors off far more effectively than many web pages to a site. If you have a lot to say, break it up into smaller chunks spread across more pages, not just one.

Music, backgrounds, frames and flash

Music is often irritating to visitors, especially if they cannot turn it off. Just because you like it does not mean that your visitors will. A rule of thumb about adding music to a website is that you should scrap the idea if the music is not an absolute necessity. If you do offer music on your website and web pages you need to offer an option to turn it off or risk losing traffic.

Dark, gothic and black backgrounds are not cool if you are not an alternative website. Musicians and artists’ websites can benefit from these backgrounds to more effect. However, they are a strict no-no for commercial and business websites. Frames are just as uncouth on modern websites. They are old hat and can make indexing difficult. Flash is not going to be noticed by engines and crawlers, they just don’t see it and flash can ward of well meaning visitors too, just don’t do it.

Adsense

Google Adsense is not going to do you any favours unless you are trying to sell affiliate websites to your visitors. Forget Adsense and keep your visitors to yourself if your website is for commercial purposes.
