The internet is a world of change. Trends gain strength with lightning speed, whipping around your well-made plans and sending them awry. The search engine optimisation industry is constantly subjected to the forces of change, and this also has a big impact on your site. Your only defence is to learn how to read the storm.

Obtaining professional advice is always a good idea to keep on top of the changes in search engine optimisation, and you can talk to us at SEO Consult Australia. A savvy SEO expert will be able to see the changes in the wind through close observation. In 2010, we’re already seeing things shift. Here are a few tips for the future:

Attracting organic traffic will be vital

The trend the industry is already seeing is that more internet users relying on their own searches than advertising to find a business. This is good news if you’ve invested in your site’s SEO.

Smart internet marketing plans should bend to this trend, rather than fight it. Search page advertising should be used as a way to augment SEO, rather than the other way around. Internet users will subliminally register the mention of your business in the side bar and will click on your site. One plus is that your PPC budget should go down.

Your natural click-through rate will count for SEO

As more internet users turn to organic results when they’re looking for information, Google is going to look to natural popularity factors as an indication of success. At the moment, it’s still fairly easy to fake popularity. As long as Google doesn’t see the under-the-table agreements between you and other site owners, your links are taken as a good indicator of your popularity around the net.

Google and the other search engines are all-too aware of the flaws in this system, and appear to be working toward a solution. That solution seems to be an increased reliance on their own stats when people click on your site, or in other words, more importance given to organic click-through rates.

The organic click-through rate is calculated by the number of times your site is seen on a search engine results page versus the number of times it’s clicked on. If 100 people search your main keyword, and only 10 people click on your listing, you’ve got an organic CTR of 10%. An increased reliance on this will change your entire online campaign, including internet marketing.

Pleasing users will be even more important

Google has been telling us for years that pleasing internet users is the most important thing. Each change Google has made over the last few years has put even more pressure on sites to please users, and this isn’t going to go away. One of the ways in which quality will be measured in the future is the time users spend on your site. This concept is still fairly new to SEO, but SEO experts who have measured the time on site stats for their clients have noticed a significant difference in rankings for sticky sites.
