There are many different methods which are regarded as search engine optimisation techniques and unfortunately a lot of these methods are not actually that useful for your business. Some unethical SEO companies encourage their clients to use SEO methods like this and doing this can severely damage their chances of success in the future. A business must only use the most ethical, suitable and appropriate SEO methods if is to be successful with its search engine optimisation campaign.

There are certain SEO methods that are not encouraged by the search engines and that are not useful for online businesses but that remain popular and that regularly tempt those business owners that are new to search engine optimisation.

Submitting your business details to as many directories as possible appeals to some site owners and is a technique used by many. This may seem like a good and productive method because having your website listed in a directory can help gain exposure for your business and can therefore possibly increase the amount of traffic that visits your site too. However, whilst submitting your website to a few of the most popular and respectable directories that have their information ranked highly in the search results and submitting to a few smaller and high quality directories related to your business can be beneficial, submitting your business to every directory possible is a big mistake. The search engines look for high quality links to websites and if your website is ranked to low quality directory sites then this will not reflect positively on your business. If a company is offering to submit your website to thousands of directories for the purpose of SEO, it is best to avoid them and to look for a more professional and ethical SEO specialist.

Another unethical SEO method that is tempting for many but that can have terrible consequences for a business is the purchasing of links. Links are important in a search engine optimisation campaign but the search engines are looking for high quality links that are relevant and that have been established over time and through hard work and link building effort. Those websites that have purchased numerous links and that have links from irrelevant and low quality sites will be acknowledged as not having built appropriate links to their site and will be punished with lower rankings in the search results. Again, if a company is encouraging you to use a method like this they should be avoided if you want your SEO campaign to be successful.
