Site owners have tried all sorts of tricks over the years when it comes to getting inbound links. Setting up your own sites and interlinking is a particularly old one, and one that doesn’t work. One of the reasons for this is detection of similar IP addresses.

The search engines have taken IP addresses into account for some time now. SEO experts recommend that site owners check out their IP address for problems before establishing a site. When it comes to links between sites on similar IPs, Google gets suspicious of a linking scheme and the penalty is swift and nasty.

Problems for innocent sites

Like any search engine restriction, sometimes sites operating legitimately get caught out. If you track down someone willing to give you a link and they happen to be on a similar IP address, you might be in trouble. This situation is incredibly rare. A more common situation is that of a webmaster operating several sites using the same site host, and trying to support their sites by interlinking. The sites may be completely separate from the webmaster’s point of view, but from Google’s they are unnaturally linked by the interest of the webmaster.

So what do you do? Some site owners try to resolve the problem by hosting their sites on different IPs. The theory is that what Google can’t see, won’t hurt them. Not many SEO experts would openly recommend this move, as it is an absolute and deliberate manipulation of the search engines.

Some interlinking is OK

Setting up huge numbers of links between sites you own is never a good idea. The search engines tend to get suspicious when one site seems overeager to provide links even when the sites seem unrelated. When both sites are on the same, or similar, IP address, that suspicion converts into a long-lasting penalty.

That said, there is usually an allowance for error. In the case of links between sites with the same IP address, it seems to be acceptable to set up between five and six links as a maximum. It’s also a good idea to be transparent about the connection. Talk to our experts at SEO Consult Australia if you’re worried about this and other search engine optimisation problems.

Be genuine

When it comes down to it, the only kinds of links that Google absolutely approves of are completely natural ones. These are the links that occur when someone sees your site, thinks it’s wonderful, and links to it from their site. This does happen occasionally, but any site interested in search engine optimisation isn’t going to patiently wait for others to link to them. This is where the major linking problems come in.

If you’re impatient for links, there are ways to build a profile with genuine value. Approaching other sites and forging relationships, for example, is really only giving the natural growth of links a little push, and the search engines have no choice but to tolerate it. When it comes to deliberately setting up sites with relevant content to provide your site with links, however,
