Search engine optimisation takes a long time to get results. This is one of the first things most companies learn about SEO, as it’s what sets the discipline apart from other internet marketing methods. What many companies don’t learn, at least until it’s too late, is that ‘long term’ doesn’t just apply to the results of SEO. Optimisation should be undertaken over the long term as well if you want to maintain your rankings.

Many experts advise that you perform regular optimisation maintenance by adding fresh content to your site, keeping your keyword list updated, cleaning up your structure periodically and keeping tabs on your competitors. SEO maintenance is not just about the changes you need to make to your site. Maintaining your rankings is about the changes in the industry as well

Google keeps changing the game

One of the major things to look out for is Google changes. The search engines have always made a few changes here and there over time, but in recent years as competition has heated up between the major players, updates have been occurring more frequently. Google, in particular, has made some very big alterations to its search strategy over the last two years. This pattern of change appears to be continuing, so a smart site owner needs to keep in touch. Talk to our experts at SEO Consult Australia about Google’s changes.

How to keep up

The best way to keep up with the search engines is to keep tabs on the SEO community. The optimisation community is highly active in a number of areas, with plenty of ways for interested parties to keep in touch:

*Join forums. As many newcomers discover when they first dip their toes in the wide seas of search engine optimization, SEO experts are only too happy to offer their advice. Forums can be an excellent source of information as they’re all about answering questions, some of which you might not have thought to ask.

*Read blogs. SEO experts tend to get very excited about the most minute Google changes, so their blogs are an excellent place to keep yourself updated on the industry. It’s advisable to subscribe to more than one blog in order to get a well-rounded feel for what’s going on.

*Look at publications. There are almost as many online publications about SEO as there are SEO blogs. These can be valuable because they feature a wide number of points of view in the one place. This can be handy when you’re looking at an issue that is up for debate.

*Attend conferences. The SEO industry meets for conferences regularly, and some of the conference activities are conducted online. If you’re really invested in your site’s optimisation, these conferences can be a great place to get an update on all the latest techniques.

Of course, not all of these activities are necessary for your SEO maintenance plan. Doing just one of the above will keep you well-informed on the necessities of your optimisation maintenance. The path you choose is up to you.
