Search engine optimisation is vital for any business that wants to be successful online. SEO is a process used by businesses and SEO companies in order to achieve higher rankings in the major search engines. The higher a website is ranked for its keywords in a major search engine such as Google, the more traffic the website will receive and therefore the potential for sales is greatly increased. This process and the necessary SEO techniques vary greatly depending on the business, its current situation and the market that it is in.

There are numerous SEO methods available and these methods are constantly evolving with new techniques becoming influential and effective. This is why SEO is such an exciting topic and a subject that requires constant monitoring and attention. In order to ensure that an SEO campaign will really make a positive difference for a business, the most suitable and effective methods must be used and if a new appropriate technique becomes known of, this must also be incorporated into the search engine optimisation campaign of the business.

Within the current common SEO techniques used by businesses when optimising their websites there are on page and off page search engine optimisation methods. The title and Meta tags a website has, the content within a website, the domain name, the age of the website, and the number of links to the website are all factors that are widely recognised as playing a role in search engine optimisation. More recent techniques such as the writing of articles and blogs and using social networking websites are also highly influential and are also now an important part of search engine optimisation.

However, within this wide range of search engines optimisation techniques that are known to make a difference to how a website is ranked by the search engines there are also unethical black hat methods that should be avoided by any business that wants to achieve long term success through the optimisation of their website. Black hat methods are not encouraged by the search engines and websites found to be using methods to try and manipulate the websites will be treated at a disadvantage. Some businesses do choose to use these methods as the results can be quite immediate but the consequences of this can be devastating with many websites banned for using this type of method. These techniques are not used by respectable and ethical companies and will not be encouraged or carried out by respectable professional SEO companies either.
