Google is currently the most popular search engine with millions of users using the search service it provides each day. This of course means that any business hoping for success wants its website to be displayed on the first page of search results provided by Google when a relevant search query is made. However, how Google determines the ranking of its websites in search results is regularly changing and developing meaning that there are many different factors that can affect the way a website is ranked in the search results of Google and the other main search engines too.

One of the possible factors that could have a significant influence over where a relevant search result is ranked is the structure of the URL. Many of those involved in search engine optimisation suggest that the location of a page on a server can make a difference to how it is ranked. It is commonly believed that web pages that are located in the section known as the root directory are more likely to be noticed and regarded as important by Google. Pages that are not located in the root directory and that feature trailing slashes in the URL may possibly be viewed as of less importance and less relevance and therefore not ranked as highly by Google and others. However, how accurate these assumptions are in the ranking of websites is questionable and some argue that the location of the URL does not make a significant difference.

What is considered an important factor is how visible the web page is. If a web page is thoroughly and correctly linked to other pages within the website and features many inbound links then this will make a difference and make it more likely that the web spiders are able to find these pages, index them and regard them as relevant when certain phrases or keywords are searched for. Therefore, ensuring that any web page deemed important is efficiently linked to as many times as possible from other pages of the website and other reputable and respected websites too, will increase the likelihood that these pages will be ranked highly and that the amount of traffic to the page will be increased. This is considered an important part of search engine optimisation.

The structure of the URL can make a difference in many ways in terms of search engine optimisation and the encouraging of more traffic to a site. By having a short URL it may make it easier for visitors to the site to remember it and visit it again and users may also be more likely to click on a short URL when displayed in search results because they can see exactly where they will be directed to easily and quickly. The structure of the URL can also be significant for the use of keywords. Research has shown that if a URL features the keywords that are also present and relevant in the content of the page then it will have an increased chance of being ranked highly by search engines such as Google.

There are many different factors and techniques that are involved in search engine optimisation and that are necessary in order to be successful in this area. SEO Consult can help you to understand these SEO methods and help identify which are the right techniques for you and your business.
