The internet is filled with different web pages, not all of them are created the same. A website is made up of web pages and so is a blog. This is but one similarity that they share. Both web pages and blogs use web addresses or URLs. They both need web hosts in order to appear on the internet and to keep them going.
Websites and blogs both include data in many forms such as images, text and much more. Both of these web entities can be optimized through search engine optimization. Both of them can benefit from Google Analytics tracking. If they are so similar, why are they not called the same thing? And, how are they different from each other? All of these questions and more arise when you compare the differences and similarities between websites and blogs. Let’s look at it further.
Differences between the two
Websites and blogs are not the same thing, even though they share a great many similarities. Blogs are different from websites in their use of Web 2.0 and in their programming. Blogs are the forerunners of social media websites such as Facebook and other social media applications such as Twitter. In general, websites do not need updates, fresh content, user generated comments and more on a daily or even hourly basis. However, blogs do need just that. Without constant change, a blog cannot hope to survive in the blogosphere the internet has created.
Another huge difference is that blogs are designed differently to websites. Blogs are meant to be edited by you and not by professional web designers. This is because blogs are rich sources of ever-changing information.
Imagine having to pay someone to tweak and add to your blog each time, you would go bankrupt within a few days time. Another difference between blogs and websites is how their programming attracts web crawlers. Blogs attract the crawlers all the time whereas a website can go days, weeks or even months before receiving another visit from a crawler. Blogs are visited, literally, on an hourly basis by spiders.
Blogs rank higher
Have you ever noticed how blogs often rank higher than their website counterparts, even if a blog is linked to a business website? Well, this is thanks to the unique design and programming of a blog.
A blog flourishes on constant search engine optimization and continual updating and refreshing of information. They also rank higher because they are constantly attracting the web crawlers to check their new content and changes. This is fantastic for optimization and allows them to rank better.
Blogs are interactive
Websites offer static information that does not get added to or changed very often. The information on websites is also very impersonal, detached and not at all interactive. Blogs, on the other hand, are far more interactive. They elicit reader input in the form of comments and they often have a more relaxed tone, communicating with the reader not at them. This in turn makes blogs far more popular as sources of information and this boosts their optimization and rank naturally.
