The blogosphere is huge and it grows every day; there are now over 115 million people blogging away across the world. That is a huge number, but in reality a huge percentage of those bloggers are not very successful at all or making any money. Many bloggers fall pretty flat on their faces. This is completely avoidable if bloggers work from a solid foundation instead of jumping in at the deep end.

Start off right

For a successful blog that you want to use to make money, you cannot start of with a bad structural design. Doing your blog through the free blogging community is cheap and easy, but you will not have your own domain name, so you won’t have branding of your name. Building your own blog through Wordpress for instance gives you control, greater SEO functions and also a large array of widgets and plug-ins to use.

When you want to blog you need to have a sharp focus of the niche you want to compete in. The blogosphere works with niches and tribes, whether it is consumers, contributors or admirers. You need to take the time to identify exactly where you will fit in. The blogging community is real people with likes and dislikes and you must know who and what you are going to be blogging to and know exactly how to communicate with them. If your communication is unfocussed, they will not be interested in joining you and become guest bloggers.

SEO and content

Just like any website on the internet, your blog needs optimisation and keyword research. The search engines will only send traffic to blogs that have excellent content and for this you need to identify the keywords, terms and phrases your tribe is searching for. You need to optimise your central blog theme for your blog tribe and each of your postings with the appropriate long tail key phrases.

Your writing technique must appeal to your blog visitors and the search engines so using bad search engine optimisation tactics is an absolute no-no. Your content of your blog must be optimised in exactly the same way and to the exact high standard that you optimise your formal website.

Give value

When you want to be a serious and profitable blogger make sure that you give your readers value. You have to blog regularly and not only when you feel like it. You have to offer them great value through your posts and give them incentives such as freebies. People love freebies and this is a great way to make your blog sought after. This is called lead capturing when you offer your readers something as an incentive.

A common mistake many bloggers make is to trivialize their postings with inconsequential snippets. When you use a blog as a business tool, people are not interested in your dog or your weekend. They want value and your blog postings must give this to them. If you wrap all of the above blog dos and don’ts up in solid, practical search engine optimisation you have a winning recipe for blogging.
