As a beginner you have to understand that getting good rankings for your chosen keywords may take forever before you see results, even inbound links targeting your keywords can be frustrating.  Every blogger wants the same thing, high rankings yet only ten websites can be on the front page in the search results page and it takes a lot of hard work and proper SEO techniques if you want to supersede those blogs that are already there, and keep your ranking once you get there.

First things first

First and foremost do a keyword research on the terms you want to optimise in your blog.  There are some keywords that will almost never rank high, even if you pay the earth for them because there is fierce competition for them, so top rankings are tough.  You should concentrate on three or four letter word search phrases if you want to rank easier on specific search engines.  Try to find keywords that make sense to your visitor when arranged in a few combinations as these will help you get higher rankings.  Make a list and at the end of the list analyse your keyword combinations and see which ones perform better on search results and which ones you need to work on further.  Start the process of optimisation again.  This is a long process but one that will teach you SEO for long lasting profit.

Place your keywords correctly

Profitable blogs rely on one major factor and that is once you have decided on your main keywords it is vital that you place them in exactly the right places so that search engines can find them and rank your pages according to search queries.  The most important places and those that give more weight are when they are placed in the Title, in the Link Text, the Headings and in the first 20 words of the paragraph page.

Title:  your keywords should appear as either the first or second word in your title

Link Text:  This is the clickable portion of your links

Headings:  You can use CSS files to control the size of the text in your heading

Paragraph page:  Using bold or italics will make your keyword more important,

Other places that will show results are to place your keywords in Domain URL’s, Folder and File Names and in the Image ALT Text which are used for graphical links.

Google places high importance when you place keywords in the text of your links as this indicates that you are structuring your link strategy correctly.  In an ideal setting, you should only use text links on your site and not graphical button links.  Google also look for keywords that are contained in link text.  Google cannot see links embedded in graphics and all they have to go on is the ALT attribute for image tags which doesn’t carry much weight with them.

Make sure that your keywords in the link text match the keywords on your pages and that the link points specifically to them.
