If you’ve spent much time reading up on the SEO advice available on the net, you’ll have often come across a stress on the importance of spelling and grammar. These two simple things are mentioned so often because they are ignored so often. They are also incredibly important.
Most of the spelling errors around the net come from the need to rush content onto pages. Site owners need to get their content up onto their website swiftly and simply don’t have the time to invest in checking and double-checking. It is hard to get everything right, with no mistakes, but it is well worth it to do so. There are plenty of examples of how much bad spelling can affect a business’ image. Here’s just one.
It’s the case of the extra ‘o.’ An article recently published by a search engine optimisation company was all about how to avoid being suckered in by SEO offers. It revealed the tricks that some slightly untrustworthy search engine optimisation firms use when approaching people out of the blue, and advised readers how to uncover the truth about their own site’s position with the search engines.
This was all well and good. The article contained some excellent advice that would be helpful to any site owner. The trouble was, throughout the article they misspelled the word ‘losing’ as ‘loosing.’ The effect? Instant credibility fall.
Internet users aren’t English grammar teachers, but they will detect such an obvious spelling error. One misspelling would have been fine, but unfortunately, in an article all about losing some SEO advantages, the word was mentioned at least once every short paragraph.
It’s easy to see how the mistake occurred. Loosing is a valid word, so the word processor spelling function would not have picked up on it. All the article needed was for one set of human eyes to read through it, to pick up on the obvious mistake. Unfortunately, the mistake slipped through, and ultimately undermined the message of the article.
Why is spelling so important? Again, the above error is a good example. In an article all about detecting untrustworthy and unprofessional behaviour, one basic spelling error conveyed the feeling that the article itself was unprofessional. It’s much like going to a business consultant who appears in worn-out track pants and grotty hair. You’re not going to trust their advice because they don’t appear to practice what they preach.
Image does play an important part in any form of business. When it comes to your site’s content, you can’t afford to ignore proofreading. This is one of the reasons to consult your SEO consultant for content, and you can talk to us at SEO Consult Australia.
Mistakes you can afford to make
It’s important to note that the major error in the above example was devastating to the article’s message because it was constantly repeated. Minor errors tend to be overlooked. The article also had a constantly misplaced apostrophe, but that’s something that is unlikely to annoy more than a handful of people.
