Three big content blunders

Getting content onto the pages of a website isn’t always easy. Particularly when a site owner is trying to run on a very tight budget, getting text for web pages can be a seriously difficult task. Often, it seems like you can have quality, quantity or cost-effectiveness, but never all three together.

Part of the atrocious content out there on the net is generated because of a misunderstanding on the part of site owners. Some site owners hear their search engine optimization consultants say ‘you need content’ and take that to mean ‘put any old slop on your pages and you’ll be fine.’ As anyone knows from their experiences as an internet user, any old slop does not work on web pages. Quality content is worth investing in.

In the struggle to get enough good content on their websites, site owners have made plenty of mistakes. Here are three of the major ones, and why these strategies don’t work.

  • Theft. Stealing content from another website isn’t going to work as part of your search engine optimization plan – but probably not for the reasons you think. Sure, there’s the moral question of whether a business should ever steal anything, even if it’s in digital form. Content theft is a bad idea regardless of the moral concerns. This is because only unique content can really be of value to your site.

The search engines are constantly on the lookout for unique content. When they come across duplicated content, they tend to consider it lower in value. This is why even using freely available content, such as that featured on article websites, is not a great idea. Only original content is going to be useful for your site’s SEO. • Stagnation. Another major mistake is to post a whole bunch of content at once, then leave your site alone for weeks. Supplying your site with fresh content will only be useful to your SEO when it’s consistent. It’s vital to develop a content plan during your initial optimisation. This will help you schedule content for posting on a regular basis.

It can be difficult to find time to sit down and post to your site every day. If this is going to be a problem, it’s advisable to find a scheduling program that will allow you to upload a number of pieces at once and schedule them to publish over the week.

  • Advertising. If your site features only promotional content, you’re going to have a hard time keeping internet users on your pages. Worse still, putting your site users off can cause a lowering in your ranking over time. It can help to look at things from the point of view of your target users. Would you enjoy a site which only featured advertising text?

If you’re stuck for content ideas, talk to your search engine optimisation consultant or a professional writer. They may be able to help you to plan out content ideas along with your schedule.
