The reason for integrating SEO & SEM

Together SEO or Search Engine Optimisation and SEM or Search Engine Marketing provides a way to build your brand to such an extent that the popularity of your business will rocket.  Integrating the two provides higher ROI, or Return on Investment than singly.  The concept involves combining both paid for searches and organic searches into one marketing plan.

SEO on its own provides a highly efficient means of promoting a website on the World Wide Web.  It is also able to attract targeted visitors to a site via the keywords they use in their searches.  More traffic should mean higher conversions which mean an increased ROI.  SEM on the other hand entails the process of spending money on online marketing or promotional campaigns.  Included in SEM are processes such as PPC or Pay per Click and sponsored links.

Successfully integrating the two offers benefits such as increased traffic as well as a powerful marketing strategy that is hard to beat.

Organic and Paid Search

Paid searches involved inserting paid advertisements on a search engine results page, or SERP.  They consist of a textual links to either a website or a landing page that are relevant to a users search criteria.  These links normally appear at the right hand side of the SERP towards the top of the page. They can also be referred to as Pay per Click listings.

Organic searches on the other hand rely on the internet to promote a website by placing relevant keywords on the pages, content or Meta tags within it.  The more a site is promoted the higher up on the SERP the website will appear.  This makes it easier to attract higher traffic rates.

Individually each employs a different method of promoting a website that is able to produce results.  When combined they can be a very powerful marketing tool as they work in synergy with each other.  PPC can help create brand awareness which in turn helps increase the flow of organic traffic.  If someone recognises a brand name they are more likely to click through to a website.

Calculating ROI

There is a formula involved in calculating ROI.  This formula provides the data expressed as a decimal.  When this is multiplied by 100 you get a percentage value.

To measure ROI there are three things that need to be understood.

1.    First in Net Profit which provides an answer regarding the amount a business has earned over and above what has been spent, such as operating costs for instance.
2.    The next is how much a business has invested,  included in this are start up costs or money invested along the way.
3.    Then comes the period of time in which  you are monitoring ROI, usually annually, quarterly or bi-annually.

In view of this the ROI formula looks like this:  what was made over and above what you spent times 100 to give the value as a percentage.  Net profit / investment = ROI x 100
