Even if you are using the most sophisticated Search Engine Optimisation techniques and methods, the probability of success is reduced if you don’t have the right keywords. Success or failure can be as simple as this, yet many people haven’t got this essential aspect of SEO right. Providing your potential customers with the keywords they are most likely to use during their search will help you not only achieve high rankings but also good conversions.
Yet, many still refuse to adapt or modify their existing keywords or modify their content to reflect them either. It helps to remember or consider your customers point of view when you pick your keywords. Investing time, energy and money into building and promoting your site is useless if you are continually overlooked.
Keyword Volume is often overlooked
Apart from selecting the right keywords you need to supply them in enough volume throughout your pages too. Keyword Volume is defined in terms of the number of phrases that result in search engine’s referrals for your site over a period of time.
However, when you are conducting SEO there is a lot of data that confuse the results and even though a search engine’s referrals have increased does not always mean you are getting better SEO results. This is where Keyword Volume can be used as an indicator of how your SEO campaign is performing. For instance, if you are getting referrals off 100 phrases and you are now getting the same referrals off 200 phrases this may be an indication that you are being ranked for many more phrases instead.
Finding great keywords
There are many ways to find keywords and many tools that help make it easier to do. These methods may be of help to you
• Free Keyword Tools: there are many free tools that will provide search volumes for keywords while suggesting alternatives. They won’t provide information on either competition keywords nor on the effectiveness of keywords however.
• Brainstorming: Guessing and brainstorming for keywords is free and often produces results. You can also embed an analytics tool in your site and use this to bounce off your keywords off in order to tell you if your keywords are generating traffic. If you think a keyword is viable, don’t reject it, try it out and test it.
• Drill into your Analytics Data: This tool will give you data on searches that have resulted in visits to your site. You can then take the top keyword searches that sent traffic to you.
• Traditional Media: Things such as TV, radio or advertisements all use words to entice their audience and grab their attention. You can also test these phrases to show how effective they are.
• Ask your friends and colleagues: You will be able to glean from them how other people think when they are searching for something.
Hopefully one of these techniques will help you improve your visibility in the search engine. Searching for keywords have be tremendously time consuming but highly rewarding and there are still heaps and heaps of good keywords capable of generating high search volumes waiting to be ‘discovered’.
