When it comes to search engine optimization there are few things emphasised as keywords are. Content it king, yes, but many people place the importance of keywords above that. Sometimes that can be to the benefit of the website and sometimes it can be to the detriment of it too. What you need to do is to strike a balance and keep that equilibrium in perfect shape. However, you cannot simply discard the importance of keywords; they are the all important way in which visitors find your website in the SERPs

Competition is tough

Keywords are many, but keywords that perfectly suit your industry are fewer and the keywords to describe your particular product or service are even fewer still. So where does this leave you as a website owner? Well, it leaves you in a tad bit of a predicament. You see, you need to use certain keywords in order to attain proper placing in the SERPs. If you are selling roses and you use the keywords for garden hose suppliers, you are going to attract the wrong visitors.

This will be bad for your business as you will not make any rose sales to people who are in search of garden hoses. So it is very important to use the right keywords for your particular business or company. However, there are millions of websites on the internet and there are bound to be hundreds pedalling the exact same products or services as yours.

This means that there is a huge amount of competition for your particular sphere of keywords. This is where search engine optimization comes into play. You can optimize your website to gain better ranking above other websites using the exact same keywords as you are. However, you are still going to have to take on keyword battles. This is where it is important to know when and how to pick your fights.

Check out the competition

You need to check out your competition. Visit their websites as a visitor and see where they have slipped up with their search engine optimization as far as keywords are concerned. Look at tags, domain names and so much more. Look at their layout, web design, colour schemes and whole list of other website features. Pick out their faults and their successes and make notes of each and every one of them.

Now, you need to return to your own website in progress and look at it just as critically. Take your queue from their successes and make them yours. If their website is successful because of a good layout, make sure that your layout is just as good if not better. Do not steal, plagiarise or copy content, design, layout and other website features. Take all of their faults and make sure that your own website does not contain the same ones. Look at their faults and makes notes to improve your website where theirs has failed.

Focus phrases

Even with the best optimization, there are still going to be more experienced and connected websites. The competition for generalized keywords is ridiculously difficult. This is where you need to leave the fight and choose a different one. Choose to battle it out for focused, long tail keywords and keyword phrases so that you pop up in specifically targeted searches.
